Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I think I found a way to block the tight zone froce against a strong reduction with the weak saftey in the box:
Most likley Sam is gonna be outside the 7 tech. and Mike will be stacked over the 3 tech.
Tackle and TE zone/fan 7 tech to Sam fullback leads on Mike (reading the 3 tech like the tailback does) guard bases 3 tech center and BSG combo 1 tech to Will BST blocks weak saftey
Sounds great! A team that makes a living with zone plays (such as Alex Gibbs; U. of Minnestoa; ETC.) will attempt to make the play go into reduction. The reason I don't force the play into reduction (although your suggestion above is VERY GOOD) is the RB will usually cutback (which is not what I want him to do), and if there is a shade backside (or 2I) may have to wind it all the way back beyond the Off-G to the "wide" side of the defense. What we would LIKE to do is run the Counter back to the "wide" side to essentially the same spot - which gets us more yds. than the cutback off inside zone.
Your thinking is VERY SOUND for those teams that want to make the Tight Zone hold up against almost everything!
If you remember in the Tight zone video Gibbs diagramed tight zone force strong against a Weak reduction (under) front where the SS came down into the box and he had the guard and tackle take their combo on the 5 tech to the SS (making it look like wide zone). Fullback blocked Mike. Center reached shade. He said that Mike would think it is Wide zone and basically take himself out of the play allowing the Fullback an easy block on him.
So the way I described it against the over front the TE and T's combination makes it look like wide zone in the eyes of the Mike Backer allowing the FB an easy block on him. What do you think??
If the DE is in a 9 tech I might not work as well.
Coach Joe - Yes, I'm looking right at the Tight Zone Force Strong vs a weak reduction with the S/S down strong (in my notes). What you are saying is that you would run it strong into the "Over" front, correct? It looks good to me. 2 things to check out - you WILL get a 6 or 9 tech DE (you were concerned with that), and the RB will probably cutback. As you invision the play - isn't the RB going to cutback off the 3 tech? I wish we could go over this on the dry erase board - it is hard to visualize it.
Denver permits the RB ONE cut & "live with it - they don't like "dancers". The two best "zone runners" I ever saw (JOHN RIGGINS & TERELL DAVIS) were NOT cutback runners. All the spotstcasters used to talk about Terell Davis "cutting back", which was a bunch of crap! As you know, Alex Gibbs showed film for an hour or more showing how Davis almost always crammed the ball at the aiming point. We TRY to call the play so as to minimize the chance of cutbacks. Good RB coaches don't talk much about cutbacks - most will tell you that the BEST cutback is NO cutback, and it should be natural. IF you DO cutback - make one decisive cut at the heel depth of the O-Line & "LIVE WITH IT"!!!!!
I know I'm probably not doing a good job of answering your question. Call me at 804-740-4479 so I can discuss it via phone!!!
Yeah for tight zone he runs off of the 3 tech, and the fullbacks block is off of the 3 tech. as well. Basically you call tight zone force in the huddle strong and the defense brings the weak saftey down, so there is no secondary force to the strong side. If Sam is in a loaded position (outside the TE or stacked outside the DE) then it is a good play tight or wide, the problem is when SAM is inside the TE. If you remember Gibbs says he wants the fullback going to B or C gap. He doesn't block linebackers in A gap.
CORRECT! I love talking football, but it is frustrating NOT to be able to DIAGRAM an answer to your question. Email your phone number to me today - send to butzadams@hotmail.com - & I'll call you this evening.
To be honest with you I think wide zone force is better into the strong reduction no matter who comes down into the box. But if the Sam is aligned outside the 7 tech. you have something no matter what the call.
