I'm coaching the ILBs in a 5-2. I am looking for thoughts on a general coaching progression. I'm thinking in terms of coaching ILBs from the ground up/daily things to hit on with everyone. Thanks for any help.
We always start out with stance and starts, eliminating false steps. Along with those drills mentioned, we are going to rep the heck out of our keys and correlating gap responsibilities, which this year will be flow (FB). Coach Cella - In your 5-2 if the FB takes a path toward the C gap (ex: power), what is the back side LB's path?
Key the guard, find the ball, tackle the man w/ the ball. We're only concerned w/ the guard and the ballcarrier. If there's a better way to teach it, let me know. I wonder sometimes if I'm too basic.

I once heard Jim McMahon say that he would never be a coach when he was done playing. He said coaches are too analytical, always hashing and rehashing! He said just take what the defense gives you and go with that! Always made a lot of sense to me, what you just posted is exactly right in my book for a LB, read your keys, locate the ball, tackle the guy that's got it! All the other stuff becomes superflous when compared with the basic facts that you just stated. When Mike Singletary was running Buddy Ryans 46, he had 6 reads on every play as the mike. Come on, this is HS football, not Integral Calculus!
J.C.Easton PS: When Drew Bledso was with the Patriots, he had 11 reads in The PSL. Of course, he scored in the top 2 percentile IN THE WORLD on the Mensa exam! How many QB's on the HS level really read the few we give them correctly? Not many.

If there's one thing I feel uncomfortable with going into this season it's our LBs. It is probably the toughest position to really play well, especially at the small school level. We are going away from keying guard right away because we had a heck of a time last season doing it, especially when the guard came out to base the LB or cut him off. It got to the point where we would get frustrated with the kids, and then look at the tape and realize that sometimes the guard was pretty dang confusing to read and be super aggressive. (Also, I'm not sure we repped it as much as I would have liked in practice.) Anyway, we are going to a combination read of near back (or fullback) to play side guard to see if we can get our LBs being more aggressive in attacking the LOS. The LBs will have a flow to / flow away gap to take care of. For example, in basic where the guards are uncovered the tackles would have C gaps, DEs have D gaps / contain, Nose has playside / both A gaps. The LBs have their B gap on flow to and the back side A on flow away. Suppose I'm the Left backer and the fullback steps to the opposite a gap (ex: dive), the LB would shoot his eyes to the opposite guard and make a beeline to fill his A gap. If the guard does anything but pull, he will continue and plug his hole. If the guard pulls, he will redirect and follow. We will always fit/ take on the blocker so we have leverage toward our gap. I'm sure you've probably heard of this before. What do you think?
Coach, I have coached Lb's for almost 20 years. We have run every defense at the HS level. Reading the back thru the guards has always worked well for us. We are in a power running league that has many wing t teams. Man or zone schemes it has worked very well. This along with a 5 minute, defeating the wing period daily, has increased our success on defense. The basic read, defeating the block, and flying to the ball are basics we work everyday. We are a very small school with lb/db type kids. We run a 44 and jump, stunt and take away the best play for the d/d-field position tendencies. Hope this helps.
