The first professional football team to be recognized as such played in the township of Latrobe, in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, forty miles southeast of Pittsburgh. It was sponsored by the local YMCA. Latrobe made its artistic debut on August 31, 1895, by defeating Jeannette, another township ten miles away, by the impressive score of 12-0. For the next ten years, Latrobe fielded a powerful team which played wherever and whenever it could, for whatever cash it could get.
