coaches i wanted your thoughts on defending the wing t with the base 4-4 look. We usually have a 3 technique tackle and a 6 tech to the te/wing combo and a 1 tech and five to the split side. The midle backers key fb and the outsides key far back to emlos. We run cover 3 and 1. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated
3/1 with DTs will work, i personaly like a 6/head-up with the strongside end and 5 weak. i would suggest reading the guards-too much double hand offs, bucks, ctrs and traps-if you want the most reliable read of wing t-brake down center blocking backside. ends have to wrongarm, olb's have to keep great contain and the ild's have to fill the open window off tackle. the easiest way to describe this is a pryamid w/ olb-contain, ilb-fill outside window/great scrape, de-spill. we played wing t wk 1 and de's played great but olb and ilb played terrible-we lost. last season this pryamid got us to state title game. you have now taken 90% of their O away-belly and trap only things left. hope this helps
Coach, we run the 44 and have been very successful vs wing t teams. We never give the same look twice with our dt's and have them slant strong or weak depending on field position, down and distance and tendencies. When we are on a hash, I usually send the inside lb to the hash. It has taken away belly. Also, we have a 5 minute defeat the wing period daily due to our league having 5 wing t teams. We teach our ends to crash hard and blow up the trap. We wrong should everything. Our olb's have contain. On passing downs in the middle of the field I many times align our dt's head up and do not slant them. This has stopped waggle and ctr pass. Our weakness in this defense is the curl zones. Without a pass rush on occasion they have run waggle curl and got a few first downs. Our adjustment was to play bump and run on the se and send someone the next time we felt it was coming. Our dt's replace the heels of the oline and find the ball. We are a cover 3 team in one variation or another. I feel teams need to have a defensive period without a ball to show the schemes to the players. We treat trap, sweep and down all the same. We beat up the wings and never let the te get to our lb's. Sometime this means putting the de head up. The reason our de knife in so hard is because the wing t we see, the qb is never more than 3 or 4 yards deep is belly option or anything else he reverses out in. I ran the wing t for 15 years so I have a decent feel for it. Hope this give you some ideas. Lastly, we jump to a tnt bear front or a 4i bear front. This have been simple: the inlb drops to the nose. If in a 4i, the dt's slant into the outside shoulders of the guards. Anything else, just ask. Coach Nick
