When preparing a college team during the week for a game how big of a role does motivation play on the part of the head coach play?
If a head coach says "I don't know if the team is fired up....I'll know on Saturday if their ready to block and tackle and catch" in response to the question "coach is the team fired up for the game this week," how would some of you characterize this attitude and approach and is it conducive to success when dealing with 18 to 21 year olds?
a coach cannot motivate people. motivation comes from goal setting and personal pride.
I think the coach is being honesty. all a coach can do is teach the game of football and mentally prepare the team for the opponents tendencies. to me that is the biggest thing.
you need to study your opponents. say they lineup in a particular foramtion and the always run the toss sweep or something. you need to get your players to mentally recognize that and respond accordingly.
I certainly think the coach is just being honest, have been there and done that! However, I think anyone can be motivated by another individual, be it a coach or a Minister or a counselor or a good friend, a parent or whomever. We all look at things differently. It has been my experience as a coach that years down the line after having coached a player, have that player walk up to me on the street or come by the practice field and say thanks for the life's lessons you taught me, as well as, how to play football. All the great coaches, here again just my opinion, that stand out in the history of the game were great motivators! From Bear Bryant to Vince Lombardi to Paul Brown to whomever, they are remembered not only for their great wins on the field, but for the great things that they taught their players about life. Ask Joe Paterno, or Bobby Bowden if they feel as though they have made motivational contributions to their players to help them become better men, not only better athletes. See what they tell you. There is a coach with whom I have become close friends with on this forum. His name is Billy Dunn and his email is simply Billyndunn. He is the QB coach and OC in Grapeland Texas at the school that suffered the tragic death three weeks ago of the young man struck by lightening and was taken from us at that tender age of a HS Senior. It changed Billy's entire attitude about life in a heart beat! Why not drop him an email at the above address and let him share his story with you. Then see if you can't be motivated by a football coach. There is not a man alive who will fight you any harder on a football field than myself. I absolutely destest losing with everything within me! I prepare hard, I coach hard, and when I step on that field it is all about winning, believe me. But, at 63 years of age and still actively coaching, I have learned that we do indeed, carry a lot of responsibility toward the young men we coach. Just one coach's opinion.

That is almost correct, but rather it is Billyndunn(With a capitol B, all other letters lower case, notice the n between the y and the d.) You need nothing else but that, unusual I know, but that's it.

I am in the process of trying to help this guy out. he emailed me regarding the jailbreak screen. seems like a nice guy and I am trying to help him out with the jailbreak.
If your referring to Billy in your post, he is very deserving of any help you can offer. He is a 23 year veteran of HS coaching and very humble in all of his posts to me. I am really looking forward to meeting him in person, and am going to Texas to do just that.
