The actual birth of the National Football League took place during the hot afternoon of September 17, 1920, as its founders gathered in the automobile agnecy of Ralph Hays, in Canton, Ohio. Hays aso managed the Canton Bulldogs of that year. Jim Thorpe was there, and was elected president of the new American Professional Football Association. George Halas, back from the New York Yankees baseball team which had farmed him out to St. Paul, was there, representing the Staley Starch Company of Decatur, which had named him its athletic director. Stanley Cofall, one-time Notre Dame star, then running the Massillon Tigers, was on hand to be elected vice-president. A.F. Ranney, sponsor of the Akron team, was made secretary-treasurer.
