Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
The midline was devised as a solution to defenses that used to play a 3 technique to make life miserable for inside veer teams. The playside guard veer releases to near LB leaving the 3 technique unblocked. The playside tackle blocks outside. the TE folds underneath if theere are two LB's or blocks outside if there is only one Lb between the tackles. The Backside tackle blocks outside and the backside guard and center combo the A gap player away from the call to the nearest LB.
The FB runs straight up the center's crack and the QB reads the unblocked 3 technique. The QB will give the ball everytime unless the 3 technique crashes for the FB. If the Qb gets a "pull" read, he replaces the 3 technique and run's the ball upfield in the B gap.
Fun Play with a couple of wrinkles you can put in if the defense starts crashing a LB to the B gap to stop the QB. Also playaction can be a killer as well.
You can go with a Flex look where you flex the TE out 6 yards. This should get them out of the 4i look to the TE.
or go to a two TE set to force them to balance up. I prefer two slots and two splits out of one back. Now they have to balance up or you will have a numbers advantage.
Don't force the scheme against this front....use formations to gain the number's advantage.
Max, Versus a reduced 50, you run would run midline or inside veer to the 3 tech on the se side. On midline have The TB take the place of the TE in becoming the 2nd tracker of the pslb to fs.
some people live on what they know, and some people live for what they don't
We ran it out of the I and the bone. You never run the play to the 1 Tech., always to the 3. Hang 50 gave a good explanation of how its run. The 3 tech.(or first man outside the guard, could be a 4i or 5.) is the read and is unblocked. PSG blocks near LB, C and BSG combo BS A gap to LB. PST blocks out and TE will fold underneath on the LB. FB's path is the centers crack. QB takes a step away from playside with backside foot(left foot goes back first if running to the right) and meshes with the FB. If DT crashes on the FB or any contact is felt on the FB during the mesh the QB will pull and will replace where the DT came from. IF running to the right our RHB would run to the hole and helps the TE seal the LB inside. The LHB runs pitch relationship even though there is no pitch.
We also ran a triple option off this same look. Everything stays the same but the PST leaves the DE alone and blocks LB. TE releases for FS. PSHB releases and blocks OLB. QB and FB's paths stay the same. QB reads DT for midline read, if the DT crashes the QB will pull and then keep or Pitch off of the DE.
Some defenses will run a LB into the B gap to stop the midline QB Keep. When we see this, we run Midline Arc.
BST - Outside BSG - Combo with Center the A gap player to BS LB C - Combo with the BS Guard on the A gap player to BS LB PSG - Veer Release to Near LB PST - Veer Release to Near LB TE - Arc release #2 (we count players from the B gap out not including LB'ers) Z - Push/Crack the FS
QB - Reads the 3 technique for the Midline & 5 technique for the pitch TB- Runs Pitch Route
The defense takes themselves out of perimeter support by running a LB into the B gap. Now the perimeter is wide open if you can get #2 blocked. Almost like stealing......
A solid play action pass for us off the midline is to play fake the midline and fold the TE under to the LB like in normal midline. The TE flashes his hands like he is going to block the LB and slips by him into the backside seam. The pass is only a 10-15 yard pass but it is a killer when defenses fly to the ball. He will be wide open. The QB rides the midline and steps off 3 steps and throws.
If you use a one back trips set, you can run TE/Wing with a flanker to one side and run the same play action pass. The TE folds under to the backside seam and the wing runs the front side seam. The Qb rides it the same way and reads the FS and throws opposite.
If we call switch, the wing folds under to the backside seam and the TE runs the frontside seam. Same play just a different way to get the ball to your playmakers.
These are a couple of adjustments that have helped us move the ball to the endzone off the midline.
