Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
By the way, can someone please give me some coaching points for the backs in the crazy option - landmarks, etc.? Does it have to be from a 2 back set ? Can you get a backside slot underneath (if so, do you need to motion him ?)? I'd appreciate some help - quickly. Thanks.
Coach, if I'm thinking of the right play, we've run the so called crazy a little bit. We call it shuffle option. We run it from a one back set and bring the guy in speed motion in front of the quarterback. We snap it early (when the back is around the inside shoulder of the tackle). We tell our QB to aim about 2 yards outside the DE and attack outside of him. If the DE follows to keep contain we pitch it forward, if he's slow to get outside we'll pitch it out to the runningback in the backfield. It takes some practice to time it all up but it's a nice little play when you get it down. Good luck.

I like to run load option against 4-4 teams that like to blitz. If the team is run blitzing with it's ILBs then it doesn't make sense to me to dive the FB abyway. Send the FB on the traditional option player (DE or OLB for us) and then look to option the next player, usually the OLB if you have blocked the DE, or the CB if the OLB is blocked. The QB uses a modified freeze option approach to give the motioning WB time to get into pitch relationship.
How do you block it? Just basic on blocking, leaving the DE untouched? Can you run it from the gun with two back flanking the QB or is it better with jet motion? I have also heard of the playside slot receiver acting as the pitchman. How would you do this?
We use what we call drive blocking (like on) and block the DE. We then instruct the QB to find the force player and option off him. The force player that we usually see is the OLB or $$.
We will run it exactly how it is described by Jet31 in above post. Then the next series we will come right back, and option the DE who of course is unblocked when we run it that way. Just a little wrinkle to keep them guessing. I had never even heard of the scheme(crazy option) until Coach Campbell gave me a breakdown awhile back, and I'm in my 41st year of coaching. I took what he gave me to the practice field, tried it, repped it, and we love it!
