Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I have a question? I keep asking people I know how tough it is to run the OV from the base formation(spread option) with the FB at 4 yds. and 2 foot splits between C & G and the G & T. Many seem to think the play is too tough (because of FB relationship to QB). I love the play and need to understand any thoughts involved.
We added outside veer to our multiple option, flexbone package this year. It has been devastating for defenses. The best part is that the defender who is responsible for the QB is now the dive key...ooh baby.
The FB's aiming point is the PS hip of the tackle. The QB takes four steps to the mesh and sits down. His read is the same as it is on midline and inside veer...give unless the dive key commits 100% to the dive. The pitch key is either the 1st defender stacked or outside the dive key OR the CB.
Who is the dive read against a 50 defense with a head up defensive tackle on the offensive tackle and the olb head up on the A-back. Is it the OLB as a dive read?
WHEN RUNNING THE INSIDE VEER, YOUR DIVE READ IS THE 4,4i,5 tech., VERSES A 50 FRONT. Sometimes in a 4 front they will walk up a LB and he becomes the read. The rule that never fails is to read the first defender outside the B hole, no matter how they align.
THE ONLY RULE THAT IS APPLICABLE FOR THE QB WHEN READING THE OUTSIDE VEER, WITHOUT EXCEPTION, IS HE WILL ALWAYS READ THE EMLOS, NO MATTER WHO THAT IS, BE IT A DE, A OLB, OR THE SS. HE WILL ONLY READ THE VERY END MAN ON THE LOS.
ANOTHER VERY IMPORTANT COACHING POINT IS TO ALWAYS HAVE YOUR O LINE SURGE OFF THE BALL SO AS TO PROVIDE A DOWNHILL ANGLE OF ATTACK FOR YOUR QB. YOUR QB SHOULD NEVER STOP BUT STEP RIGHT UP INTO THE HOLE AND TRANSFER THE BALL AT THE MESH POINT. I COACH POINTING THE BALL RATHER THAN THE " RIDE AND DECIDE METHOD". ON THE OSV, THERE IS A FLASH HESITATION AT THE EDGE OF THE C GAP BY THE QB SO AS TO FACILITATE A SMOOTH TRANSFER OF THE BALL, HOWEVER THERE IS NO SITTING OR STOPPING BY THE QB FOR THE REASON THAT IF HE PULLS THE BALL AT THE POA, HIS PATH IS VERY LIKELY TO BECOME BUBBLED ON HIS WAY TO HIS NEXT READ ON THE PERIMETER. I ran the ISV and the OSV very successfully from the bone for a lot of years and feel qualified to make these statements. I would love to talk more about this with anyone who is interested and I will be glad to explain my system in full. I have several players who are well known in the NFL today from those teams that we only lost a handful of games in my 8 year tenure there as QB coach.

The dive key is the DE. The PST blocks inside to the PSILB; if the DT crosses his face, then PST stays on the DT. The PSHB blocks inside to the DT; if the DT gets washed down by the PST, then he goes to the PSILB.
The great thing about the play is that defenses know that they have to stop the FB on the inside veer play, otherwise, we'll run it all day. To do this with a 50, you have to squeeze or pinch the DT to the FB. This defensive reaction opens the door wide for the outside veer.
Coach, would it be possible to get a copy of some of this on film. If so please give me your e-mail and I will contact you. Thanks. I do not run the flexbone but this sounds very interesting.
If your looking at a 50 front, with the QB under center and a FB and RB (I backs) and you allow a DT aligned in a 5 tech to pinch quickly enough to take the dive away, you have the wrong guy at FB. I had Ralph Dawkins of the Saints(older brother of Brian Dawkins who is alluded to as the best safety in the NFL by many and plays for the Eagles) along with Dominique Ross (2 Super Bowl rings with the Cowboys) on the HS level. We ran the triple out of the bone and we did not get beat by a DT in a 5 tech. It is an automatic give to the FB when the QB reads a 5 tech, just as it is if he reads a 4i an automatic pull. The DT who really knows how to play against the option, is one who aligns in a straight up 4 tech, because now he is able to give the QB a fuzzy read and forces the QB to make a decision on the move, not in the PSL. The DE is not the dive key, ever, in a 50 front. It is the DT. Not trying to be contentious in any manner, but I am in my 41st year of coaching. Am I missing something in your post?

According to your previous post in this topic, I think you are talking inside veer. I am talking outside veer.
On the inside veer play, I think we're on the same page. A 4-tech DT does give us the toughest time; so, we loop the inside veer occasionally to freeze him for a moment (giving us a give read). Additionally, the 4i-tech DT always gives us a pull read and the 5-tech has given us a pull read less than half the time (we don't have a great player at FB, but he's our best).
On the outside veer, I always thought you read the EMLOS for the dive key. I've been wrong before (and will be again); so if you could help me on this, I would appreciate it.
No your absolutely right on the OSV. You always read the emlos and pitch off the corner. See my previous posts above as to who that emlos can be besides the DE, and I think we are together now, agreed?

When running OV, best case scenario is to keep running triple (IV) to the 4 tech until their coach slides him inside to a 4i. If you have a 4 tech, it will be a so - so play unless your PST can block him down inside every single time. So run inside veer until he is a 4i, then you may have a 7 on your Play side slot back. The uncovered guard should base the pslb, then your playside slot back should go straight up and cut the same scraping playside LB in case the guard doesnt get him.
Your dive read is the 7 tech and your pitch read is the near safety or corner whereever comes up first, and the playside WR blocks the guy that the playside slot doesn't block.
Your QB is stepping at 3 o'clock now and nearly sprinting down the line still riding the fullback and still not riding the FB past his (QB) belt buckle. If that 7 tech is not ON the LOS it is most likely a give everytime.
Remember OV compliments IV, not an every down play. You want to confuse the defense because you are now blocking the guy you were reading on IV, and reading the guy you were pitching off of.
