just in search of a decent stretching routine for DEVELOPMENT not WARM UP? if any of you have a routine that your athletes use then i would really appreciate it.
Are you looking for a routine to develop flexibility? I participate in martial arts heavily in the off season and have a lot of stretching information. Most of my stretching work is done post workout as a warm down because hard static stretching will cause a loss of muscle power for 30-45 minutes following the session. I use some light dynamic stretching at the start of the workout following some sort of activity to increase muscle temperature. If you would like some more detailed information, e-mail me at galdrapan@aol.com
Joe...sorry I forgot all about this post! I will definitely get with you on some stretches..i gotta go do some work right now..but I promise I'll get with you later!
If I remember correctly, you have some experience with Westside methods, right? If you are familiar with Joe Defranco (also an advocate of conjugate methods), he demonstrates the hip-flexor stretch in one of his articles on his website.
The stretch for the external hip rotators is also a very important one that people ignore. I will explain it the best I can...
1)Sit in a chair with one leg crossed over the the opposite leg (foot on the floor). The ankle of the crossed leg should be just behind the knee of the opposite leg. (Just think of a normal sitting position).
2)Gently press downward on knee of the CROSSED leg (not too much pressure..just lightly).
3)Slowly lean the upper body forward until the chest is almost sitting on your lap.
That is it....you will feel the stretch BIG TIME if you are doing it right. I will try to find a link that demonstrates it in pictures if you need it.
These are stretches that I ALWAYS perform upon completion of a training session. Although I do not static stretch before the session, I do perform these two stretches BEFORE a sprinting session (of course after a complete dynamic warm up).
I would use these in conjunction with other stretches that increase flexibility in the Hamstrings, trunk and shoulder region.
If you can't find that hip flexor stretch, email me at: fballwarrior22@charter.net
I'll find it for you. You might want to take "galdrapan" up on his offer as well to see what he has.
