Coach, I have a problem. I have been applying for head coaching positions at several high schools and I just can't catch a break. I never make it to the interview and the reason is because I'm not a school teacher. I am currently the head coach of a semi-pro football team and this is my third year as a head coach. In 1997 I started coaching on the semi-pro level as a wide receiver coach. I progressed through the ranks and became the offensive coordinator. My offenses have consistently scored 4 touchdowns a game and I have had 2 different QB's throw for more than 20 TD's in a season. As a result, I was asked to become the head coach of an expansion semi-pro team in 2002. 2003 was our first season on the field and we had a record of 3-7 (tough year). Our second season (2004) we finished 10-1. With that in mind I know my resume has been better than most guys applying for these jobs. I know of one job I applied for and I was the only applicant with Head Coaching experience, but I never got a chance at an interview. I am a 10 year police officer and my salary is pretty good. I also hold a masters degree (more than most teachers). I just don't understand why I can't even at least get an interview. I would hate to think I would have to take a reduction in pay and change careers just to get an interview to be a head coach of a high school football team. Oh by the way, I've also coached on the high school level as a running backs coach. It just happened to be at the only public school in the city to ever win a state championship. (Raines high school, Jacksonville, FL)
I just don't understand. If I got a chance to interview, I have no doubt I'd get whatever job I applied for. It's so bad for me, one of the young men that I have coached on the semi-pro level was hired as head coach at a high school (because he's a teacher). I'm not bad mouthing the teaching profession, but I think it's an injustice to me, the sport of high school football, and the kids and parents I could impact in a positive manner if given the chance.
Can you offer any advice ??
:confused;
