What is done in the off-season as far as staff development? I am not concerened with strength and conditioning we have that covered, I am talking about staff related development. What is it that you feel is important, and how do you go about getting it done?
How often do you meet? What is being done during that meeting time? How do you get better as a staff?
each staff memeber has a is a memeber of the foot coaches professional growth association. bill williams is a great with special teams and tackling. his progressions are the best I have seen. If you want to run the inside zone he is your guy as well. Has a wonderful progression for kids to learn.
go to clinics. most schools I know will cover this. take a whole staff then each divide up and cover as many lectures as possible.
I often find the guys on sunday are more willing to share as there typcially are fewer people in the room during 3 day clinics. once there was 5 people in this room. I was me, rob spence the oc at toledo adn a great guy and 3 other people. rob went into such detail because it was just a few of us.
find local universities. I am blessed I have several d3 and d2 schools plus a d1 school within a 2 hr drive. d3 guys typically are willing to share everything and anything.
do a fund raiser and pickout one big time university to go to. My two that I am saving for are hawaii and texas tech.
1. each coach has a certain number of players usually between 10 and 15. each coach has to meet with his players once during the preseason, once during the offseason. sit down for 15 min and talk with the kids. get them to make some goals and stuff like that. you are responsible for your 10-15. I will talk for a few minutes each day with 3 or 4 of my kids. I do not think it is that hard to do in passing or study hall checkup on the kids. we have grade reports as well and behavior reports. we are like big brothers to these kids. we switch them up each year so we do have not much crossover. we expect his out of all our coaches. we have 12 coach on our staff. we also do not believe in dividing up teams. if you are a coach you are a coach. we all work together. I was a fr coach one time and I go on a varsity player for loafing(my pet peave) and the head coach jumped all over me because he was not my player. one it showed the kid I was not respected by the header and two the varsity players didnot have to respect me as I was the lowly fr coach. to go on with this point, I decided to stop showingup for varsity games. why waste my time on friday night to I felt. the varsity coach asked me why I was nolonger showingup I said" you coach your players and I will coach mine.that is what you told me" he went on to tell me how he needed my in the booth on friday night and I told him what he had done.
I believe every memeber is a important part of my staff. If I want them to showup on friday nights I better treat them with respect during the week. also, head coaches need to showup to the j.v. and fr home games along with the varsity players. I do not ask a under coach to do anything that I would not do.
2. we meet the third saturday of each month and talk for acouple hrs.
Thank you for your time. What do you do in terms of breaking down your game tape? Do you have a method for self scouting? Also, do you do any position specific work during the winter months with your kids?
It's always great reading your posts... Good stuff..
in my state we can have no nonseason contact with the kids other then weight room. since we are a passing team we do make available catch right. catch right is a ball on a nylon cord. you throw it, it comes back to you. we call them receiver reaction ballls and we have them hanging in the weight room. in 15 min a player can get over 100 catches.
to be honest I am not much of a film guy. I would rather spend time with the kids getting them to set goals in the offseason. during the sesaon we grade our film based on alignment, assignment, excution and effort. we do showup on saturday and look at film as a staff first, then the kids, then we go out and practice for 90 to 120 min. this is a defensive practice and we work on skills but we also work on proper alignment, assignment, excution and effort.
we do have a computer program which we can put our play chart through and it spits out a tendencies. we chart our plays during the game like I am sure anyone else does.
One of the best things we do each year for staff development is to attend spring ball at one of the nearby colleges. This gives us a couple of days away from everything else where we can just be immersed in football.
Another thing we did last winter was make an interactive CD about O-Line play. My offensive line coach and I got together on Sundays for a couple of months and put together this CD geared toward helping our middle school coaches. It turned out pretty good, and we're making one for QBs this winter.
