Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
What coverage is Mumme's Y-cross designed for ? What do you have the backside receivers run on Y-stick ? Is the Mesh play a good cover 3 play ? I know you have a smash effect on the playside...you have the crossing routes for man coverage...but, what about cover 3 ?
Email Coach Chris Hatcher at Valdosta State University where he was an All American for Hal in his playing days, and has been the Head Coach there now for a few years. He runs the Air Raid exclusively and is a great young man. Get it straight from the guy who knows! VSU is located in Valdosta, Georgia where I had a professional Minor League team, and made his acquaintence. The day I met him at his practice field, he invited me to make myself at home and go to whatever group of position players I cared to watch, etc. I took advantage of his hospitality and had a great afternoon. He is a very successful young college coach and will be moving up to bigger and better things.

Y cross can beat alot of coverages alot depends on what you do with the extra rec on the backside.
lest start with with 3 wr and splitbacks.
x(single rec) runs the vertical route Y(crosser) runs a crosser or sail route as we call it z(wr to Y side) has several choices you can run a seam read which is what we do. he runs a post, dig, vertical or cur based on the coverage
backside of Y stick is a slant route. if you have twins to that side you can run double slant or a slant by the slot and slant return by the wr.
the mesh play is good vs all coverages. vs cover 3 a nice play is post by the wr and wheel by the rb.
In your first example, is the Z making a sight adjustment along with your QB reading the coverage the same way, or does he communicate his adjustment in the PSL to the QB? I am not familiar with the terminology "slant return". How is that to be translated? Thanks for your time, as always.

he runs a slant but halfway he plants and returns toward the sideline. I do not use it I just have seen there playbook and a lecture.
on the stick you need the slant to hold the backer so he does not run with the stick route. if the backer does then you go to what they call stick special where they hit the slant backside.
the base play which mumme did the z ran a curl and the back ran a swing so you had a high/low on any flat defender.
a seam read is a old run and shoot term. it is based on the safety depth.
if he(safety) is even I am leaving if he is back I sit down and work to a open area if he crosses my face I cross his face.
lets take a 1 safety defense for argument on the y cross
x runs the vertical y runs the crosser z can run a variety of routes. for example, if the fs (single safety defense) starts to follow the crosser z could run a post or vertical route because the safety is nolonger in the middle of the field.
I feel Y cross works best from a trips set. I got my version from the UMASS head coach mark whipple at noel mazzone's oneback clinic.
