Help!!!!! I am a second year head coach in the state of Wyoming. My Team will be playing for the state class 4A championship this Sat. What do I need to do to get the kids ready for this level of a game. Do I keep the routine the same? Do I stress the importance of the game? Or do I just approach it like every other game we have played this year. We are pretty good our record in 9-1 and the team we are playing is 10-0. Just looking for some advice.
Coach, Sincere congratulations in making the final game at the 4-AAAA level in your state, in this your second year. That is a fine accolade to your and your staffs coaching abilities!!! I have always found the bigger the game, the less that has to be verbalized by the staff. The athletes know this is the big one, they do not have to be reminded every two minutes during this final week of preparation. Just go with what got you there, stay on an even keel with lots of positive reinforcement for your players. Avoid any of the penny ante things that pop up and cause controversey this week. Just be yourself. My concern, more than anything for big games is this; are the atheletes taking care of themselves properly, eating right, getting plenty of sleep and not out ramming around until all hours? Just make this a fun week, as much as is possible, staying focused but on an even keel, not letting them get down and not letting the adrenalin burn them out early. Shoot! You da Man! When you win the state, be sure and give plenty of credit to your staff because without them it would not have happened most likely. But, remember to give the vast majority of the credit to the kids, they are the ones who made the plays! Best of luck, coach!

Best of luck in the championship game Coach. The previous posts make a lot of sense to me in keeping things on an even keel, avoiding distractions and keeping the same routine that has put your team in this position in the first place. As far as getting the kids ready to play a game of this magnitude, something tells me you know your kids well enough to know when and how to push that button when the time comes. Again, best of luck to you!

Well we didn't play very well. For that reason it is disappointing. We lost 30-10 but the kids worked hard all year to get the opportunity to play for all the marbles. We already have kids in the weight room working toword next year. If anything we gained some valuable experience. i still have some questions about preperation. I think the long trip hindered us a little. We had to travel four hours away which in Wyoming isn't that bad. But I chose to stay the night half way. I am not sure if that was the wisest decision. I really hate to loose though!!!
We all hate to lose, but you still did a great job! It is our job to put them in the position to win, but they have to make the plays work. On game night, a great coaching effort is maybe 20% of a win. The winning is done by the athletes on the field, giving their all for four quarters! Next time you will have experience, and experience breeds confidence, confidence that you didn't have this time around. Next time you will have corrected the things that you feel now that need correcting, and you will come out winners! Your younger kids will have had the entire experience of the whole season behind them, and they will be itching to get back after it right away (sounds as though they already have!) Next time around, they will have that confidence working for them too. You'll be just fine, don't look at the pile, just keep choppin'.
