When you scout an opponent, What are you looking for to prepare your team? I usually have our scout team run the opponents plays and make sure we align correctly, know what our responsibilities are and give them down and distance tendencies. We also cover personel. My question is am I giving them too much info? DC's How much info are you giving week in and week out? Where do you teach it the best? We cover it in def individual and then also vs scout team in our team part of defensive workout.
After scouting an opponent, we want to know what their favorite plays are by formation. Sometimes it might simply be the plays they run most frequently from each formation. As we breakdown an opponent, we look for what plays are run primalrily to the SE or slot and what plays are run to the TE. During practice that week, we will spend a large block of time in some kind of 1/2 line drill running SE-side plays and TE-side plays. Some day we will spend more time running half line than we do in team. Team will focus on the particular plays we feel we must stop and any special plays or formations (reverses, screens, etc). Sometimes we'll spend 10 minutes vs nothing but one-back formations. This has been very good for us.
I look a formations and plays. I used to do down and distance, but I haven't found many tendencies with that. Then I just keep looking over at the sheet and see what type of team they are. Everytime I play someone I answer two questions that Mike Holmgren does with the Seattle Seahawks.
What can we do to them?
What can they do to us?
