Coaches I just wanted to get some feedback. I currently made a career change to teaching. I started my first teaching job last month. I want to get into coaching. I did not play football in college. I have been studying a lot of aspects of the game the last couple years to keep me motivated. I have always been a student of the game and feel I could be a good coach. I am uncertain what oppertunities I may have at my current school. I feel like it would probably be a position coach working with 9th grade or JV teams. I have the oppertunity to become the offensive line coach for a semi-pro team nearby. The OC was a GA for Fedora at Middle Tennssee State and runs the no-huddle spread offense. I feel that this would be a great oppertunity to learn and develop as a coach. I was curious how other coaches would view this experience for future oppertunities?
hey coach- i started as a paid position coach for a jr high team...i have been the head coach at two different jr high teams and am now seeking that "impossible" jump to varsity head coach. I never played college football either due to knee injuries in high school.
VINCE LOMBARDI WAS A THIRD TEAM GUARD AT SOME LITTLE NON-DESCRIPT COLLEGE AND GOT VERY LITTLE PLAYING TIME! BUT, LOOK WHAT HE ACCOMPLISHED IN THE COACHING RANKS!

Start with the Frosh team. Work your way up through the ranks. I paid my dues as well as most everyone on this board. One year with the frosh, one with the JV, Varsity position coach, Head JV, Varsity D-coordinator. You've got to pay your dues with your high school program. Don't coach the semi-pro team for experience when you've got a perfectly good football team at your place of employment!
I don't want to sound like a know it all but the Vince Lombardi example wasn't very good. Lombardi played college at Fordham University in the 1930's. He was a starting Guard for one of the more famous offensive lines in college hisory, "the seven blocks of granite".
New coach72, Our o-line coach never played in hs or college, he worked very hard over the years (7) and moved from fresh. team to JV and now he's a "great" varsity o-line coach.
Eddie Robinson, Charlie Weis, and Coach Fran at A&M are some examples of great coaches that never played college ball. NewCoach72, I know what you are going through as I'm doing the very same thing. If you can find a way on a staff somewhere it will help. I'm stuck trying to support a family in the evenings and go to school in day so I can't even volunteer
If you think you're above failure, you'll always be beneath success.

Risks make cowards of us all, until you consider the greatest of all risks: The risk of denying greatness.
If thats the case, then I have labored in vein for a long time. I always heard he was a seldom used guard, not a starter. Just goes to show, you can learn every day if you try hard enough. I certainly would not consider you being a know it all type for making a statement, we don't do that here. I appreciate your insight, are you from that part of the country? Your o line coach at present sounds like a much more prudent example of what I was trying to convey, perhaps he is just a little more unhearolded. Ha ha. Sincere thanks for pointing that out!

I'm not from NY, I'm originally from GB. I guess that would explain it? Lombardi was a backup for 3 years before becoming a starter. Lomardis senior year the seven blocks of granite brought Fordham to the cusp of playing in the rose bowl. Back in '36 I think, the Rose bowl was pretty much the National championship.
Well, thanks again for the enlightment. All I ever heard about was the three backup years. I'm 63 years old, saw him coach live on many an occasion (televison). Being old school in a lot of respects, I'm embarrassed that I didn't know that about him. But, like I said, you can learn every day if you so desire!
