Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
A question concerning the Read and pull for a new option Coach. First, when making the pitch read and riding the FB from the back to lead leg there tends to be a lot of confusion in our FB on when he should take the ball, whick leads to him "taking it" or the opposite. What drills would any of you suggest I try to work that communication between the QB and FB?
Coach, I ran the option for long time on the HS level as a coach, ran it as a player prior to that (QB). We always rode it in the conventional manner. But one day at Carson Newman College, we changed all that. We saw them "point" the ball rather than ride it. From that day to this, that is all I coach. It is so much simpler! In a conventional ride, the QB is forced to keep his head on his read while at the same time reaching back to the FB, which is a very unnatural position to physically be in. In the "point" technique, the QB attacks his read with the ball extended. If the ball is still there at the mesh point, the ball belongs to the runner, no guess work involved, he simply runs through the mesh and the ball is now firmly deposited in his cradle! If it is not there at the mesh point, that simply means that the QB has pulled it and is up field to his next read, etc. The Backs must be taught not to ever reach for the ball, as that is where 90% of all mesh point fumbles are created by that incorrect technique. To me, it is a much superior technique to the conventional ride. If you prefer to stay with the ride, the most effective drill for me has always been to teach proper technique to both QB and Dive Back and then just rep it and rep it and rep it, always giving as many reps to one side as the other(Liz and Rip) as opening to the liz side for a right handed Qb is a little different feeling than opening to the Rip, and vice versa for a leftie. I really would consider the point technique coach, as it eliminates fully the problem you are having. Your FB just knows to close down on the ball if it is still there at the mesh, if not to just continue on his path. The decison is entirely the QB's, just the same as always it has been. Coach Easton has given you an alternative to the traditional mesh ride and if that is something you are considering then you should get a copy of Coach Sparks video titled The Triple Option. Coach Sparks demo''s the "point" technique on the field and you will see the ball is given in the hole. If you still want to use the traditional method of "ride and decide" then here are some coaching points to ponder:
1) Your fullback should not be taking the ball from the QB. Rather the QB should be giving him the ball just like a traditional hand-off.
2) The QB should be making the decision before the FB get's to his downfield foot.
3) If the QB does get a give read, then what he should do is first release his inside hand that is closest to the FB's belly, then apply pressure on the ball with his remaining hand to "signal" to the FB that he is getting the ball. The FB will feel that pressure against his belly and start to roll over the ball and grasp it as he would a traditional hand-off.
4) If the QB get's a disconnect read he will use both hands to "snatch" the ball away from the FB when the FB get's the QB's midline. The FB will continue with a good fake and then become a downfield blocker if he has not been tackled.
5) Repitition is the key point in the option game! You should be working on the mesh, read and pitch daily.
Hope this helps and best of luck.

There is no doubt about the ball given in the point technique in the hole. That is why it is absolutely essential to get that downhill surge by the offensive line and your QB stepping to THE EDGE OF THE HOLE AND EITHER PULLING IT OR LEAVING IT FOR THE FB TO CLOSE DOWN ON, OR LEAVE IT ALONE AND NOT TOUCH IT WHATSOEVER. My term mesh point means that is where the FB gets the ball, or does not get it, according to the QB dictate, NOT THE USUAL TRANSLATION OF MESH IN THE CONVENTIONAL RIDE TECHNIQUE. I am not familiar with coach Sparks video. If the above coach recommends it, I'm sure he has seen it.

Tiger One, all right I think you convinced me to switch to the "point technique". We are an I option team. Could you please explain the qb steps and ball handling for midline and inside veer. My email is JAlgeo@pgsd.org. Thanks for your help. Jim Algeo, Jr.
Please watch your Emails this evening and I will do my best to get you started correctly. I think you have made a very good choice to go with the point method.

Hey Tiger One, just wanted to thank you again for help in switching to the "point technique". We kind of took it on the chin this past Fri. night against a very good team. We lost 39 - 22. Man it was a brutal evening. A steady rain all day and all game, and it was about 38 degrees. Ouch! Our first two drives we went right down the field with inside and outside veer, but only scored on the second drive. Then their two stud def. ends just started blowing up the dive back into the qb. Our fb is a good athlete, hits the hole quick, tough as nails, but weighs 141 pounds. Anysways, in those conditions, NO FUMBLES ON THE QB - FB "MESH"!!! I hope your season is going well, and good luck to you. Jim Algeo, Jr.
I'm glad you have experienced first hand the "point" verses the "ride". I am always glad to hear of a new disciple, and under those very adverse conditions it was especially nice to hear! Glad I was able to be of help. Please keep in touch on my personal email, love to talk football with you at any time.
