I cannot seem to understand this so maybe other coaches can explain this.
I seem to have a different outlook one football and this gets me introuble from time to time.
I do not understand why in football teams get a lead and then they try to run the clockout. baseball they try and score, basketball they try and score and for some reason you are supposed to stop trying to score once you get the lead in football.
here is the situation. a veteran( I am a veteran just not as long as this guy) cameup to me after our game today and proceeded to lecture me on how I was a bad coach for continuing to score on his team. now it was not like we had the starters and and it was not like the score was 77-0. the score was 42-17. he said there was a unwritten rule among coaches a code of conduct.
he lectured my about throwing the ball when you have the lead. now I am a passing coach and at the h.s. level it takes all my time to get the details right in the passing game with teenage kids. I just found the lecture to be in poor taste on his part. I know games are emotional but the center of the field is no place IMO to lecture a coach.
frankly my belief it is the duty of the offense to break the will of the other teams defense and it is the duty of the defense to break the will of the other teams offense.
the term controling the line of scrimage dates back to the civil war.
I tend to line myself with mike leach on this. that we run our offense regardless of who is in the game. mike leach is another guy who does not believe in slowing the offense down and running out the clock.
where did this unwritten rule come from?
