We have a very talented junior running back. 1411 yards in 10 games and 14 touchdowns behind a very mediocre offensive line. We really think that this kid a legit Division I back. Unfortunately, our school is new and small and he has not gotten a lot of attention from major schools. He will be a senior next year and I want this kid to go to a high profile college. Anyone have any insight into the process of getting a player noticed by major colleges? What can we do?
One of college scouts favorite things to do is to ask other coaches in the area, who do they know that can really play? This is always great for a youngster like yours who gets limited media coverage, scout interest, etc. because if he can really play they will come to check him out. Have the very best film available for them to watch. Don't push the kid on them, I used to give them the film and leave them alone to make their own decision. Answer questions they pose, be totally honest. There are many alternatives if the scouts do not show interest. Make a good quality high light video or CD of the young mans past season, along with a copy of his GPA, ACT score, etc. and send them to where he would like to attend. As your guy is a rising Senior, this will be the year he will start to get attention so give it time to develop before the scouts come calling. In all scenarios, the best is the one where the scouts start passing his name around, and they come to you. Remember, he will be competeing with kids from all around the nation when you are are talking Div. 1-A, where a full ride is worth over100,000.00 for an out of state player. The top echelon schools are already 3 deep at every position, they were all stars where they came from too. I always told the kids it is much better to be a big fish in a small pond, than a small fish in a big pond. If an athlete is truly Div.1-A material, it will be noticed by the scouts, count on it. If not, don't forget there is a school somewhere he can play, and if he is big time material the pro scouts will find him. Who ever heard of Mississippi Valley State until Jerry Rice put on their colors and had an exciting college career at that school? Not many. Build it (a good solid Senior season) and they will come ( the scouts). I have sent many kids to Div.1-A universities and to the pros, as well as, NAIA small schools, NCAA Div. 2, etc. and feel qualified to offer this post. Just my way.
