As a young coach, I am always looking for new/different ways of doing things when it comes to coaching. Being a defensive coach, I am particularly interested in what DC's do in the offseason and your methods of preperation for games during the season. Here are some topics I hope the DC's or other defensive position coaches would take time to answer:
Offseason:
1. How do you go about self-evaluating your defense from the previous season to see what changes (if any) you would make for the upcoming season?
2. What types of film grading do you do, i.e. # of big plays given up, play on 3rd down, sudden change situations, etc.?
3. What information do you prepare to give new players during spring training, i.e. playbooks, position manuals, etc.?
In Season:
1. We use digital scout when breaking down film. What information do you pull from the scouting report to review with your team during game weeek preparations?
2. When you make a gameplan, do you determine your fronts based on stopping the opponents fav. play(s) by formation(s) or D/D tendencies?
3. How do you go about film study with your position(s) or defensive unit?
4. What information do you give your defensive players (by position) in a scouting report for each opponent?
I know I have asked a lot of questions, but as a new coach finishing his first year at the varsity level I have a lot to learn. If possible, sample word or excel documents of your gameday call sheets, scouting reports, position grading sheets, etc. would be very helpful (preferably filled out since I am more of a visual learner). Thanks for the time members of the site. Have a great holiday season.
