Hey coaches, as a guy still in college trying to become a coach, would you recommend taking some type of intro marketing class? I am wondering if you guys think this would help you learn how to sell your program. I do have a class in administrating of interschool athletics coming up but I am wondering if I should supplement it.

MARKETING CLASSES CAN HELP IN THE AREA YOU MENTIONED, BUT SOME PR AND PUBLIC SPEAKING COURSES WOULD BETTER SERVE YOU, IMO. MARKETING IS THE ART OF GETTING A PRODUCT READY FOR PUBLIC EXPOSURE, BUT ALWAYS REMEMBER, NOTHING HAPPENS UNTIL SOMEONE SELLS SOMETHING AND THAT TAKES VERBAL EXPERTISE. A COACH IS ONLY AS GOOD AS HE IS AT COMMUNICATING A MESSAGE TO HIS PLAYERS. IT ISN'T WHAT HE KNOWS THAT'S IMPORTANT, IT'S HOW HE CAN COMMUNICATE THAT KNOWLEDGE TO OTHERS. AS A HEAD COACH HIRING ASSISTANTS, I FIND THIS SKILL ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL TO ANY ASPIRING CANDIDATE FOR MY STAFF. IF YOU CAN'T COMMUNICATE, YOU CAN'T HELP US WIN.

A marketing class might come in useful but there might be some other types of classes you may want to investigate first.
I'm a teacher 1st... and a coach second (although my wife might disagree)
I think being able to teach, or communicate as TigerOne said is the key. Coaching to me is teaching, just the curriculum is different. You need to know how to get a message across, and there are some classes that help in this area. Psychology courses, especially if they can focus on adolescents, or special education type courses are extremely useful. Two great 'teacher-coaches' are Tom Osborne (PhD in Ed Psyc) and Mike Holmgren (HS History Teacher).
You may also want to look into taking courses in computers - as the PC and other technologies are really coming in useful in the coaching fields. Additionally... books/tapes on sales techniques help because you need to be able to sell yourself, ideas, and system to the players. The X's & O's can be great... but if the kid's don't buy into it... it's useless.
Blackfly73...are you on committedcoach too? Currently I'm going through a Health/PE curriculum with minors in Math & Computer Science and just happened to be finishing up my adolescence psych course (final is next Friday). I've struggled at times selling my ideas and myself. I'm not a chest thumper for the most part. I did well in my speech class when I did take it however. You guys think communication classes would help me out more, right?

Communication classes could defintely be an asset, not for the 'speech' giving type practice only. Often they involve studies of how to effectively communictae in business/advertising via different types of media.
The more ways you can present a message, the more concise you make it... the better job of selling your ideas/system/program you'll do.
