Coaches I would like to get your opinion on your philosophy of weightlifting when out of football season. What do you require of your other sport athletes (basketball, wrestling, baseball)etc.
We have ours lift normal in the classroom, they are excused from after school workouts.
Some basketball coaches don't won't there athletes lifting during season.
I treat it just like any other inseason program. Lift to at least maintain mass and strength, maybe even get stronger. However, the most important thing for them is be able to play their respective sport well so it has to be treated just like football's inseason. Lift them 2-3 days per week, depending on what sport and when games are. Football is easy b/c in most cases it is the same day every week. Basketball, wrestling, track etc. have meets throughout the week making things kinda tough.
As for the coaches that don't train their basketball players inseason, I don't think that's a wise decision. If a season lasts 3-4 months then that is 12-16 weeks gone without any weightroom work done. Lots of lost mass and strength. Of course they will be getting in plenty of plyos..haha.
Even though playing multiple sports can be frustrating for a strength coach, its really not that bad because a 15-16 year old kid can get alot of benefit practicing the different motor skills and coordination requirements for different sports, which will help them become better athletes overall.
