Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
a sit, is a 6 yard route over the ball by an inside receiver. When he gets to that spot he can slide in or out like an option type route. The curl/flat/sit is the west coast offenses 22 X or Z in
You could run it from either the bunch or spread depending on formation. I have it setup mostly out of bunch.
On the option route we want him to work behind and between zone drops (about 10-12 yards), breaking inside or outside away from coverage.
One other thing we do against defenses that run hard to the fronside is to bring the backside reciever across the feild to create a "double" triangle with the whip and option routes.
Just mix up with motion and the release of each reciever so the defense doesn't catch on.
Check out Norm Chow's lecture on the BYU Passing game on the AFCA website about "triangles". It's AMAZING how triangles occur (often more than one on a given pattern) in your basic pass offense. I took a look at our pass offense (that we ran LONG before I ever heard Walsh talk about forming triangles), & they are present on several occassions.
Where exactly on the AFCA site is Norm Chow's article located. I searched all over and could not find it . If you could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.
IT WAS FROM THE 2000 AFCA MANUAL. I TRIED TO PULL IT UP ON "GOOGLE" (WHERE I FOUND IT BEFORE) & THEY NOW GO BACK ONLY TO 2001. YOU CAN CONTACT THE AMERICAN FOOTBALL COACHES ASSOCIATION & ORDER A COPY. GO ON TO "GOOGLE" & TYPE IN AMERICAN FOOTBALL COACHES ASSOCIATION. CLICK ON "CONTACT US".
THIS IS A FABULOUS ORGANIZATION. I STRONGLY SUGGEST THAT EVERY FOOTBALL COACH JOIN IT. I HAVE BEEN A MEMBER SINCE 1961 (YEAR VINCE LOMBARDI JOINED IT). WE WERE INDUCTED TOGETHER IN THE SAME YEAR!
ON THE SITE - IF YOU SCROLL DOWN THE LEFT COLUMN & CLICK ON AFCA LIBRARY - YOU CAN PULL UP ALL THE GREAST ARTICLES GOING BACK THRU 2001!
OTHER THINGS TO LOOK FOR ON GOOGLE RE: "TRIANGLE READ" CONCEPTS.
1. Search "UNOFFICIAL WEST COAST OFFENSE" SITE. CLICK ON PLAYBOOK INDEX. SCROLL DOWN & CLICK ON "NOTES FROM COACH WALSH ON DIVERSIFYING YOUR OFFENSE". HE GAVE ME THIS - IT TALKS ABOUT "TRIANGLE READS".
2. SEARCH AMERICAN FOOTBALL MONTLY MAGAZINE SITE (YOU HAVE TO BE A MEMBER TO ACCESS ARTICLES). SCROLL DOWN UNDER "ARTICLES" & CLICK ON "OFFENSE". SCROLL DOWN & CLICK ON "WESTERN MICHIGAN'S TRIANGLE PRINCIPLE".
3. ON GOOGLE - TYPE IN "A MILLENNIUM OFFENSE THAT BALANCES THE PASS & RUN" by JOHN MARONTO (NEED PDF ACROBAT ADOBE READER TO SEE IT, AS IT IS AN AFCA ARTICLE). ACROBAT ADOBE READER = FREE INSTALLATION.
4. ON GOOGLE - TYPE IN "INSTALLING PASSING GAME CONCEPTS IN YOUR OFFENSE" BY MICHAEL WHITE> ALSO AFCA ARTICLE.
I like what my one coaching mentor called the scat route. Which is from the bunch flat/corner/whip respectively. He learned it from Norm Chow's BYU offense and actually had a talk in his living room with him. Norm came to recruit his son NC State quarterback Jay Davis when Norm was at NC State for his 1 year. So he was learning Norm's offense as they were talking X's and O's
"TRIANGLE READ" = a passing game "CONCEPT"!!!!! Most NFL teams have 7 or 8 CONCEPTS (entire passing game fits into these 7 or 8 concepts). Most colleges have LESS (although John Macovic has TEN at Texas).
In High School - you MUST limit the "CONCEPTS" to 3 or 4 (AT MOST). We use the following:
1. HORIZONTAL STRETCH/INSIDE-OUT 2. " " /OUTSIDE-IN 3. VERTICAL STRETCH /LONG-INTERMEDIATE/SHORT 4. OBJECT RECEIVER READ (LOOKING FOR ONE MAN)
The following might illustrate:
CONCEPTS OF HORIZONTAL & VERTICAL STRETCH PASSES
#1 HORIZONTAL STRETCH: HORIZONTALLY DIVIDE THE FIELD INTO 6 DISTINCT AREAS (NOTE: THE UNDERNEATH ZONES EXTEND UP TO 12 YDS DEEP) NOTE: DIAGRAM WILL NOT TRANSMIT - DRAW A "HOOK" - "CURL" - & "FLAT" ZONE TO EACH SIDE OF THE CENTER (IN EACH 1/2 OF THE FIELD)
FIELD BALANCE IS OBTAINED BY EQUALLY DISTRIBUTING 5 ELIGIBLE RECEIVERS ACROSS THE FIELD WITHIN 5 OF THESE 6 ZONES. WE WILL HOPEFULLY GET 3 RECEIVERS OUT CALLSIDE, AND 2 RECEIVERS OUT BACKSIDE. THIS SHOULD OPEN SOME "SEAMS", "GAPS", "VOID SPACES", "WINDOWS" IN THE UNDERCOVERAGE — WHICH IS TRYING TO COVER 54 YDS HORIZONTALLY (OFTEN WITH ONLY 4 PEOPLE). NOTE: CAN HORIZONTALLY STRETCH THE 2 OR 3 DEEP ZONES AS WELL.
#2 VERTICAL STRETCH: TO STRETCH THE FIELD VERTICALLY (IN A PARTICULAR 1/3 OF THE FIELD) YOU NEED 3 RECEIVERS VS. THE 2 LEVELS OF DEFENDERS. ONE RECEIVER, USUALLY A WIDE RECEIVER, IS SENT AS DEEP AND AS FAST AS HE CAN POSSIBLY GET DEEP. ANOTHER RECEIVER HITS THE MIDDLE OF THE WIDEST AREA CREATED BY THE ONE DEEP RECEIVER DEEP AND THE ONE RECEIVER SHORT (THIS IS CALLED THE "ALLEY" OR "CREASE" IN THE DEFENSE). ANOTHER RECEIVER IS KEPT CLOSE TO THE LOS. THESE 3 MEN ARE DISTRIBUTED VERTICALLY IN ONE THIRD OF THE FIELD.
NEXT - THIS IS HOW WE APPLY THAT TO OUR OFFENSE. THIS IS A SHEET WE GIVE OUR QB'S TELLING HIM HOW TO READ EACH PASS AS CATEGORIZED BY THE ABOVE 4 "CONCEPTS".
QUARTERBACKS VITAL INFO
I. DIRECTIONAL READ (ELIMINATE ½ OF FIELD)
A) PRE-SNAP LOOK (PREFERABLY) OR,
B) POST-SNAP "TRIGGER" (BY 2nd STEP) (ON "50's" ONLY — NOT "60's")
NOTE: IF THE DEFENSE IS BALANCED & YOU CAN'T DETERMINE BEST SIDE TO THROW TO, STAY CALLSIDE BECAUSE WE WILL HAVE MORE RECEIVERS OUT TO THE CALLSIDE.
II. PROGRESSION OF RECEIVERS READ (TO ½ OF FIELD CHOSEN - AFTER GOING THRU STEP I.)
*WE PROGRESS INSIDE-OUT IF THE WR RUNS AN INBREAKING ROUTE!
B) OUTSIDE-IN (HORIZONTAL STRETCH) = 60-61, 54-55.
*WE PROGRESS OUTSIDE-IN IF THE WR RUNS AN OUTBREAKING ROUTE.
C) LONG-INTERMEDIATE-SHORT (VERTICAL STRETCH) = 52-53, 58-59.
III. OBJECT RECEIVER READ (LOOKING FIRST FOR A PARTICULAR RECEIVER OTHER THAN NORMAL PROGRESSION). COULD BE A "TAG" (57 H FLAT & UP) WHERE YOU LOOK FIRST FOR THE RECEIVER "TAGGED", OR COACH SENDS IN OBJECT RECEIVER FROM SIDELINE ("56 — "LOOK FOR Z"). IF OBJECT RECEIVER ISN'T OPEN — GO BACK TO WHAT IS LEFT OF PROGRESSION (GIVE OBJECT RECEIVER AS MUCH TIME AS POSSIBLE BECAUSE THE COACHES "SEE SOMETHING"!).
There are 3 triangle concepts that are read by the QB in almost the same way. 1. Scat (#1- whip, #2- corner, #3- shoot) 2. 'Turn' by Andrew Coverdale and Dan Robinson (#1- go, #2- shoot, #3- turn or stick[7 yds and turn outside]) 3. Mesh (#1- drags across, #2- corner, #3- shoot, backside rec.- drags across into playside hook/curl zone).
