Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I'd like to start a topic on how you all install the run game from the shotgun. Probably the easiest way would be to list the play and then go over the key coaching points. Maybe even some pros and cons on each play.

Coach the gun offense ie about 40% of our total offense. Lets start with the counter which will be the tailback counter and quarterback counter from the gun with QB reading the 5 technique for give or keep read. Coach Campbell
Like I said, this will be my 1st year truly running all of this but this is what I've picked up. It can be blocked a few ways. 1. If it's blocked like trap then only the backside guard pulls and traps with eveyone else blocking down. 2. If it's a counter tre then both the GandT will pull with the guard trapping and the T leading through the whole. If you don't want to pull the T then you can pull and H back with the G for the same result. 3. The influence ie Clemson/Northwestearn I really like this play as a changeup because it makes it tough to read the guards. Both tackles climb up to the ILB and both G pull the same direction. The G on playside will kickout the 2nd down lineman and the guard on the backside will kickout the 1st down lineman. 4. The last one is also a staple in the Northwestearn offense and it's called the Tom. It is simply the T doing the pulling by himself. My questions come with the footwork of the QB and FB. What are their steps, aiming points and whos in charge of making sure the ball gets handed off if the QB is reading. One other note, in talking to Northwestearns OL coach, they usually don't read much on the outside penetration other than on their zone play. That is when the QB has the option to pull. They will sometimes call it as an automatic. I love to here how you do things Coach C

Coach in the Gun or underneath center the trap is designed to trap the first defender past the center and the Counter to trap or kick out in man on the LOS. When the Tackle pulls its called Tackle Trap with the tackle trapping first defender the past the center. With each of these three plays you actual have two plays in one with the QB reading the EMLOS for give or keep read. Good questions
In the past we usually try to trap the 3tech, do you do the same and if so do you audible or make the call at the line or do you stick with the side it's called to?

The QB will open at a 45 degree step and then rolls over the front foot getting the ball back to the TB as deep as possible and then waggles out. The TB will drop step away from the hole so that the QB can get the ball to him deeper this helps time the back with the second puller TB gets in behind his puller and has patience to allow him the puller to read his path inside or outside. When running the QB counter from the gun, do you pull both G and T. If so, do you not want to pull both with a 3 and a 7 (TE side) and run the QB to the open side? If you pull both I don't know how you keep the 3 from taking the tackle out. I'm thinking of just running it like the tackle trap but just moving the back to the other side of the QB. This lets the guard block back on the 3 technique. Does this sound feasible.
Coach with the gun run with the counter headed towards the tight end and the QB reading the openside 5 tech. If the QB gets the give read from the 5 tech. and you run the counter GT read into a 7 tech and a 3 tech. you would have your tight end outside veer release onto the outside invert. The tackle and playside guard would Duece combo the 3 tech. to backside LBer. The pulling guard would have the kickout on the 7 tech. and the pulling tackle would have the playside LBer. Coach CAmpbell
I'm talking about the other side of the line. Will the center be able to block back on a 3 technique or will that 3 technique disrupt the pulling tackle? Is it better to only pull both with a 1 and a 5 on the back side? If we are faced with a 3 technique on the backside, I'm toying with the idea of only pulling the tackle so that the guard can block the backside 3. What do you think?

Jim no matter what side you want to run this play and the concern for you is the 3 tech yes the center can work back on the 3 tech. if you don't feel comfortable with that then run "tackle trap" and the guard stays solid to the 3 tech. Coach CAmpbell

Coach Vint vs the 3 tech. I have the center take one playside flat step and hinge and tracks the 3 tech this gives the pullers time to clear. Looking forward To New York Coach Campbell
