Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
1. Strong DE in a 6 or 7? I prefer a 6 because you can better protect your ILB. A quick TE can seal an ILB if your DE is in a 7. Of coarse there are concerns about C gap control if your DE is a 6. It might depend on the athlete. My opinion is if your DE can handle it, a 6 is always better.
Being in a 7 is going to prevent that TE from blocking down on your DT. We expand to a 6 or 9 if they are hurting us on the perimeter. Are we in agreement that what your calling a 7 tech is the inside shoulder of the TE, a six is head up on the TE, and a 9 is outside shoulder of the TE? If the TE arc releases, he then becomes the responsibility of the SS or SAM and affords your 7 tech free access to the QB. Just my way of thinking.

Unless you have a very talented and experienced played @ d-end, you're gonna have to use a 7 technique. The only time I like a 6 technique is for teams who like the outside zone/stretch play, or even a big sprint out team. A seven is a much easier technique to play. The kid knows exactly what gap is his, which foot to step with and what his keys are. The kid almost becomes a 2-gap player in a 6, which is tough unless you have a big time stud there.
As far as d-tackles go, I like to go with a shade (1 tech) and a 3.

I agree with Run n Shoot. You need a stud to play a 6. A 7 tech is easier to play. We sometimes put our strongside DE in a 9 tech and shift the DT's to a 50 front if they are hurting us outside.
I like a strong 9 technique more than a 6. Regardless of whether you are a 4-3 or a 4-4 team, when the strong end goes to a 9, I like to move the Sam into a 'queen' alignment playing the c-gap. It makes you very strong inside if you play a 4-4 or 4-3. LSU uses the strong 9 technique quite a bit. They put Marcus Spears in the 9 and it all but eliminates any outside running to the strongside.
