Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I'm interested in installing some of the gun option into my spread offense. However, when we are under center we do not run the option. Has anyone else tried this? I understand Coach Campbell runs the option from under center and the gun.
We personally only run the option out of the gun. We read the backside end when we run our zone play, and usually the wing away from the play becomes pitch man in (2x2). We also run speed and crazy option out of this as well. It has worked for us so far. We by no means are an option team. The option is just part of our arsenal. So I guess it depends on your approach.
Coach - Can you explain more of your options out of the gun for me. Crazy specifically I have heard of but am not sure what it is. What is your base package out of the spread
Our package is based out of the spread no huddle, (shotgun, 2x2, with one back) Primarily we base most of our run game off of the inside zone. When we run zone, Dart (tackle wrap) , or trap, the quarterback keys the backside DE, If the DE comes upfield then the QB gives the ball to the FB. If the DE chases the FB on the zone then the QB keeps the ball and replaces where the DE vacated. If we are in 2x2 then the inside receiver away from the zone side takes three steps backwards and gets into a pitch relationship with the quarterback. He must be patient. The quarterback now looks to the cover down defender (invert) for a possible pitch. If we are in a 2 back look then the opposite back becomes the pitch man by gaining depth and staying on the QB's hip pocket. We also run this out of a 3x1 look as well but remember, unless you bring someone in motion there will be no pitch man to the 1 receiver side.
The crazy option is the same play Utah runs with the Quarterback running speed option with another back or receiver coming underneath in pitch relationship as well. The QB reads the defensive end , and depending on the DE's reaction the QB either pitches it out on the speed or " shuffles" it underneath to the other back/receiver.
We Run our speed option just like crazy except without the other pitchman. This is just a basic rundown of our option package, If you would like me to get more in depth about something pleas feel free.
I wouldn't say that we were Gun option heavy. The options that we run will work with most types of kids. We run it primarily to keep the defense honest. We run speed option usually to exploit a lack of invert against a 3x1 formation to the weakside or if we get better numbers to one side or another. The option that we run off of our zone is built in, similar to veer except that the QB reads the Backside DE. We do this to make sure that the Defensive end doesn't crash hard to stop our zone play. Anytime we run the zone, our QB has the go ahead to pull the ball if the Backside DE chases the FB. This will make the DE more hesitant in order to open up our inside run game. We don't call alot of option unless the situation dictates as stated before, but in reality if the situation arises, anytime we run the zone it could be an option, depending on the QB's read. Our run game is based off of the inside zone, Dart, and QB counter. But the option is there as an extral tool in the toolbox.
