We face a lot of 4-4 defenses (somtimes double 9 and 3 tech, somtimes 6 technigues and 2 technigues with a slant. The problem we ran into was blocking the backside stacked LB over the guard. We couldn't zone him up with the BS guard and Tackle. A lot of time the 2 technigue would simply cut our guard. I ended up bringing in our fullback and running ISO out of the look which was effective. All uncovered lineman working inside to the dlineman and up to the stacked backer. Any thought on what I can do out of our single back stuff. I know I need to mix in more formations/shifts ect. to gain more of an advantage. It is amazing how poorly coached defenses are in our confernce when it comes to adjusting to different formations, but those d-coordinators aren't spending their off-season discussing things like we are on here.
In what your seeing on the field, would it be feasable to have your C step to the backside 2-3 tech, have your BSG trap the PS 2-3 on their side of the line while your PSG releases inside and goes to the stacked backer, or no? Can you have the c step backside to the 2-3 tech, and the BSG fold the stack? Just suggestions.

Coach If you are facing a 4-4 and want to run inside zone, go to a 1 back/2 TE/2 Wr formation. They will have 8 in the BOX and you run away from the widest OLB. that guy wil get influenced by the bootleg fake by the QB.
You can motion a TE over to block that wide OLB as well if you run to this side. If the D is balanced run to the 1/2i side. or away from the 7 tech so you get can roll all the way back.
Tell me about your ISO. How do you block it against a front you would see?
Joe, what is a 1 back, two wide, 2 WR formation? Is that your way of referring to 2 flexed ends, 2 WR's and 1 back? Thats the trouble with no universal football terminology, imo.

Joe, thanks for that reply. Double tight double wide is our # 18 formation. Thats Joe Gibbs formation, and it is a great one! My 19 formation is double tite, ACE BASE or ACE wide. IF I call 19 ace base, we stack two receivers or align them side by side on one side. If I call ACE WIDE they will align with a 5 yd. split. In both alignments they are 1 yd. deep off the LOS, always on the same side. My meaning of ACE is one side for both receivers, not the usual 1 WR to each side with double tites. My #20 formation is with the X on, and 3 receivers stacked in the slot between the X and the quick tackle, with the TE to the opposite side. I have used it with good results for years, as my son played for the Albany Fire Birds of the Arena 1 league, when they were the world champions, and I got it from them.

Coach Joe,
Thanks for the suggestions. When we run the ISO I tell the FB he has the OLB stacked over the TE. I prefer to motion him or have him aligned in broken I. The PStackle would wrong step to the 3 technigue to the stacked LB over the guard. The PSG would be base reaching the 3 or 2 tech. Center works back to the other Stacked LB over BS guard. I tell backside Guard to seal or cut if he can. BS tackle will climb to stack LB over BS TE. Backside TE would seal DE. We still go through our zone footwork with TB and QB. I tell the TB to read playside LB stacked over Guard. If he gets over the top of the Tackles block the play will cut back to A gap. If the tackle gets movement on the 3 tech with the guard and comes off on Mike then the play stays behind the FB and tackles block. It is tough for the playside LB to play this effectively which results in us getting great push from our PS tackle and guard. Off of this play I'll run the QB keep to the same side. When we run this the FB will take his initial step to the stacked LB and then bend around the PS TE. TB after the fake has the OLB. QB after fake follows FB around the edge. This is a play I save for when we really need a big play or conversion cause it is effective 2 or 3 times a game if that.
IF YOU GO TO A 3 WR/1 TE/1 RB SET - THEY WILL TAKE AN OUTSIDE LBer OUT OF THERE. MOST TEAMS WE PLAY WILL BE IN A 2I TO THE SPLIT END SIDE. YOU CAN RUN THE INSIDE ZONE INTO THE 2I AREA (WHERE B GAP IS OPEN).
YOU MENTIONED THAT THEY "SLANTED". ZONE BLOCKING CAME ABOUT MAINLY TO HANDLE SLANT & ANGLE DEFENSES. YOU WON'T CATCH ANY BIG TIME COLLEGE OR NFL TEAM MAN BLOCKING SLANT & ANGLE DEFENSES!!!!!
We do just as Oneback mentioned by going 3 wide. If the defense does not respect the slot receiver and they try to play the run with the OLB we check to bubble screen.
"Your work ethic determines your future" Boyd Eply
IF YOU GO TO a 3 WR/1 TE SET - FORCING THEM TO TAKE THE OLB OUT OF THERE, & THEY TRY TO PLAY WITH TWO SAFETIES DEEP - YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO RUN THE INSIDE ZONE AT WILL (ALL OTHER THINGS BEING EQUAL - I.E. "TALENT). TRY TO GO TO THE "WIDE" SIDE OF THE DEFENSE (IF THE PLAY THE "B GAP" WITH AN ILB AS OPPPOSED TO A DLM! YOU WILL BE RUNNING AGAINST ONLY "6 IN THE BOX", & CAN GET A HAT ON EVERYONE!!!!!
HERE IS A LITTLE CHART WE USE: (FROM A HANDOUT TO OUR QB'S & COACHES (ESP. PRESS BOX COACHES)
COUNTING DEFENDERS IN THE "BOX" FROM THE ONE BACK OFFENSE
THERE IS A MISCONCEPTION THAT WE ACTUALLY COUNT THE DEFENDERS IN THE "BOX". FOLLOWING IS THE METHOD WHICH WE USE — WHICH HAS PROVEN TO HOLD UP:
A) 2 TE/2 WR/1 RB ALIGNMENT: 1. ONE SAFETY DEEP = 8 IN THE "BOX". 2. TWO SAFETIES DEEP = 7 IN THE "BOX".
B) 1 TE/3 WR/1 RB ALIGNMENT: 1. ONE SAFETY DEEP = 7 IN THE "BOX". 2. TWO SAFETIES DEEP = 6 IN THE "BOX".
