Anybody run shotgun IZ? IF so what problems did you run into? We ran GUn IZ along with trap, counter, this year with alot of success. In all the runs we told the QB to read Backside DE to give or keep.
Off the Inside Zone we ran an option play with WR orbit motion out of a 4 wide package. If we were running IZ to the right our TB would be set left of the QB in Gun. I would have my outside most receiver from the right come in motion, once he gets to the tackle he motions around the QB. It is vital that the QB still Read BS end for give or keep fake. Line blocks Inside Zone. I tell the inside most receiver to the left to let #4 defender go. Make sure the LBs in the box are blocked before going to safety. If the QB keeps the ball on the inside zone read that means the DE crashed too hard and took away Inside Zone. We now have the QB and WR running option toward the #4 defend to the left. Numbers in the box should be secure and if the left tackle gets the left inside LB when he zone climbs the inside receiver from the left should be up on the FS.
I put this play in late in the season with great success. The only problems we had was blocks on the perimeter or the QB making the wrong read and now there are 2 to play our 2 in option. Any thoughts or ideas?
MANY PEOPLE RUN INSIDE ZONE FROM "GUN". BOBBY BOWDEN, TOMMY BOWDEN, RICH RODREQUIZ (WEST VA), NORTHWESTERN, PURDUE, TO NAME A FEW. MOST OF THEM ARE IN BOWL GAMES - TAPE THEIR OFFENSES!
We ran Inside zone from the gun. The biggest problem we had was 7 in the box. People would play a Nose, 4I's and a ghost 9. We had to throw quick game and base option.
What is your email address? I would like to talk to you about what you do.
Coach, We run the IZ and OZ from the gun with split back. If they start loading up the box we will run our IZ like an Iso. with zone blocking and the PSRB spying the PSLB or quickest threat. We will also run that same PSRB across and cross the backs to cause a mis read by the LB's. The other thing we do is to run the OZ with the PSRB leading. If you go oneback you should be able to get one out of the box if you have a passing threat, this is another thing we like to do and then we will run the QB on the IZ with the single back coming across for the BSDE, or we again will run the IZ Iso. with the oneback leading for the QB, or again run the OZ with the one back leading for the QB.

When running the gun option with two backs and a defense starts to load the box the inside or outside zone running game can be complimented with the speed option out the backside. Coach CAmpbell
I'm just learning the finer points of this game. It would seem to me that if there loading the box against you some simple play action would work. If you run from split backs, you can run what I call the Bench Route. X and Z run the outs (10-12 yds), Y runs either a choice route or a skinny post. The TB after the fake hooks up at 6 yds. The FB blocks.
I'm sure that you could design whatever routes you want. But part of what I have picked up from all of you is that if there are eight in the box pass, if there are 7 you run.
Just my opinons.

I do not feel you get a good mesh or play action when you are in 2 back split shot gun. I only run our play action out of 1 back and I must have the QB under center. We messed with split back gun play action and the defense didn't by it at all. There is no ball deception.

HosHos - I must disagree with no disception with a two back gun attack, you have run headed to one side with speed option back out the other. the crossing action of the two backs with the ability for the QB to bring speed option out the other side makes for a very soft inside. A defense must keep two plays backside for the speed option. Coach Campbell
We run playaction off the jetsweep, zone and dart out of gun 2 back with great success. One key is to make sure the o-line is selling run on your protection. If they pop their heads straight up and set up in pass pro the defense will get a pass key asap. Make sure your playaction pass pro is some type of aggressive slide or reach protection.

Coach Campbell, I will see you at MegaClinic in Toledo in late March look forward to it! I did not run the speed option this past year so my observation is strictly from the other side. I would agree after drawing it up that it could give you that deception that is need on play action. My question is the movement of the QB on this play, let's say you have a pro formation with split gun backs, the right rb runs the option course and the left rb runs the route out of the backfield...where is the mesh. Does the QB side step to the option side or stay and look for first available wr?

HosHos the left running back would take his mesh across and in front of the QB and into the LOS, with the right running back coming behind the QB for speed option if the qb gets a pull read by the backside DE. The QB would ride the left RB across him while reading the backside DE. Looking forward to the Toledo clinic, would enjoy setting down and talking some football. Coach CAmpbell
Coach Campbell, The run off of that look is great, I was looking more at play action pass out of split gun back. That is my biggest question, how do you get a good fake out of taht look? We have run the counter trey out of 2 back gun with a great mesh with the backs. LB's are on their heels trying to figure out where the ball is when we run that play. Pro formation, we bring the right RB across in front on a ride fake he then blocks for the pullling tackle or H-back. The left RB then gets the hand off after a counter step to the left , QB will run his normal option course to the BS off of this action.
