I was wondering what preference most of you have for getting 9 in the box. We were predominately a 4-3 team last year and we did a number of things to get the extra safety in the box: man on the corners, 4 across zone, etc. We found that the best way seemed to be playing man coverage on #1 and playing our safeties 8x1 outside #2 and being our primary force players. Does anyone else play it this way? Is there a better way to play it with high school kids? Any thoughts greatly appreciated.
Coach, for what it is worth, I have experimented with a 43 under front in the past. We played our secondary the way you described. It does get the Safeties involved in the run game. To play it that way, you need corners who can play man without help. But it is a great run stopper with the 9 man front.
Coach Easton, thank you for your suggestion. I used to run the 4-4 with robber coverage and we liked it a lot, but we were getting mangled with formations and adjustments. So we went to a 4-3 and tried to use the robber principle out of a 4 deep secondary. It seemed to allow us to adjust better to other formations like unbalanced, trips, etc. But it left us a bit weak in the flats so we decided to man up with the corners.
