Coaches,
Next year I am going to be the D cooridinator for a middle school team. We will run mostly 44 and sometimes a little 53. Im looking for advice on how many blitzes, stunts, fronts and coverages I should put in. I want to put in as much as possible without confusing the kids to no end.
First thing I would do, if I were you, would be to check with your local HS Head Coach and see exactly what he runs. Your job as a middle school coach is to get the kids ready for HS level competition, if you are going to have a winning program from top to bottom. Make sure you understand exactly what it is they coach at the HS level in regards to your question areas in your post. A good sound middle school program is the basis for a great varsity team! It only stands to reason that it is going to make it much easier on the athletes in future years by them not having to learn a new system all over again a couple of years down the road. Just my way.

Coach Easton,
The current head man at our school was my head coach when I played in high school. I am coaching in the school system that I went through. I know our head coach and almost all of his assistants and I also know the system they run. I plan on talking to him at some point before next season. I just wanted to get some opinions from you guys on here.
Coach, That is a very unique situation for you to be in, and a great one I might add! You know the boss of the program, you played for him and are familiar with his complete system, etc. Thats great! I would suggest that you begin with the base package ( if the ball comes to you, if it goes away, etc" and make certain each player knows his assignments in your base package. THEN ACCORDING TO YOUR PLAYERS ABILITY TO DO WHAT I CALL " ABSORB AND EXECUTE" (HOW MUCH CAN THEY HANDLE MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY) START ADDING THE PERIPHERALS. You will know when enough is enough by the results being obtained. Some kids in that age range, you can do a lot with, others not quite so much. Just always be cognizant of the fact the system is built around the players ability, not the other way around. With your enthusiasm and desire to succeed at coaching, you will be just fine. Good luck in your new assignment!
