What is the best way to find a coaching job down in the South?

I was just looking through the jobs posted on the Texas coaches association website. I noticed that many of them have P.E or open listed as the teaching positions related to the coaching position. Why is it that in Texas there are many open P.E jobs and coaching jobs available that don't even reguire you to teach? While here in Ohio it is impossible to find a P.E Job or a varsity coaching job that doesn't require you to teach?

Also most of the open job listed on the websites are head coaching jobs. Very few assistant jobs are listed. How is a person suppose to go about finding an assistant job? Call everywhere until they find one or what??

Coach, I went this route. I am from Western PA. I had a coaching job but couldn't find a full-time teaching position to go with it. Head SOUTH. Jobs on demand in North Carolina. My first two assistant positions came with jobs for both my wife and myself. Neither place even interviewed my wife. Go onto the NCHSAA website and search the open jobs. I'd bet there are 40 listed and 140 more that are not. Almost every school in the state will be hiring. I'm a head coach down here (this was my first year) and I had a stipend unfilled. Small schools (like mine) have fewer openings (obviously). However, any bigger school will always have openings. They don't usually hire coaches in NC and not included a teaching position.
A couple draw backs...#1 NO UNION. You can get used to it but the admin can dick ya much easier here. This includes having a 200-day contract instead of the 185 in PA (20...YES 20 teacher workdays...don't ask). #2 Lower pay. I'd say on average the teaching positions are 3-4 grand a year lower (at least). Coaches (for the most part) are poorly paid. Example...I made 4,400 as a second year assistant in PA. I make about 3,000 as a head coach with 10 years exp. in here. #3 There is a higher percentage of really BAD schools here. If you get into one you may end up hating life. I went to a place called Rocky Mount my first job here. GREAT athletes, good football situaion. Worst teaching situation I ever heard of. It was like being in a bad movie. Unfortunitly many of your better football schools have poor teaching situations. My advice...research, research, research. From what I can tell you the further west you move in NC, the better off you are.
There are some advantages! They do outweigh the negatives. #1 Weather. I hate snow and cold. I love the weather here. Summer can be tough but you'll make up for it with great fall (lasting until December) and spring coming in late Feb. #2 You'll get some great perks. Schools will hire your staff, weightlifting class etc. #3 Quality of life. It is great to live in NC. Different world. Once I got into a good school with a solid teaching situation I've been as happy as I ever have been. Doubt I could ever go back. If I did it would have to be a BIG raise!
One last thing...If I was a single guy (or could have gotten my wife to agree) I'd be in Texas. Football is life there. It is a highly popular after school activity in most of NC.
