Good morning and happy holidays. As a coach learning the ropes, I want to give a sincere thanks to all coaches that so selflessly "feed the fire" and so generously give their time and expertise via this forum; I think I have learned more in the last month from this forum than in the past four years of reading books and watching film.
I currently coach varsity football and teach high school English. I'm attempting to put together a proposal for an elective that stretches the mind, is research driven, and above all else, academically rigorous and engaging.
One thought I had was to combine elements of chess with the history, philosophies and ideas that have made football the great game that it is.
Does anyone have any ideas, resources or contacts to help get this train down the tracks? Above all, I want it to be a class that is not a "blow off" rather a vehicle to higher thought and critical thinking.
Thanks in advance for any help you may provide.

I am thinking of dividing the class into components starting with the history of the game (from its origins through today), offensive and defensive philosophies (ultimately kids would design playbooks around these philosophies), special teams play, motivational aspects, character education, etc. I'd also like to teach students the game chess to turn their strategic wheels intermittently during the course.
Thanks for any ideas or resources you may have.

I know this isn't chess. However, I teach a Sports Literature class. There are a few others around the area. Maybe that's something you might want to try. We do a lot of the things you mentioned.
actually that is a good combo - football and chess. In fact, thats how i got into coaching football was because of a fellow soldier/friend of mine got tired of me kicking his butt in chess all the time.
