Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Several teams in our area run the flexbone. One defense that is becoming popular in trying to stop it is a version of the 4-3. Here is the best I can describe it without sketching:
DT's in 2-techniques and stunting into the A-gaps. DE's in 4-techniques and stunting into the B-gaps or 5-techniques and grabbing the tackles while committing to the dive back. OLB's cheating wide and slow playing the dive back to the QB. Meaning this...at the snap the OLB does not commit, he sits to see who has the ball. If the QB gives it, then he takes the dive. If he pulls it, then he goes right to the QB. Coverage is a 4 across that rotates to cover 3 (sky puts the safety on the pitch, cloud puts the CB on the pitch)
We attacked these defenses with a ton of ISV...we just adjusted our perimeter blocking to make the force player the pitch key. We mixed in OSV (even though the dive key was off the LOS) with some success...We got a lot of give reads...but with the OLB off the LOS, he was able to react and make the tackle at about 4-5 yards. Counter option was also good to us.
How would you attack this defense? Are we missing something? What adjustments should we make? Thanks in advance for your replies.
ISV - DE as the read key and the OSLB as the pitch key. If 5 Technique is playing FB everytime, run double and have the FB put his shoulder pad on the outside hip of the 5 Tech. This allows to you to attack the pitch key (OSLB) with speed. Midline Follow - Have PSG base the 2 Technique, DE dig out and fan the 5 Technique. With the OSLB wide, lead the PS slot through for the MLB. With a 2 Technique, it becomes automatic disconnect from the FB and QB keep. Counter Option - You mentioned you have had a lot of success with this. With the 5 Technique getting hands on the OT, it makes it easier for the pulling OG to log the 5 Tech. Jet Sweep - Have the OC reach the 2 Technique, PSG reach the 5 Technique (you mentioned he was stunting the B-Gap), PST reach the OSLB, PS slot arc the safety and the WR block the CB.
We also like to give 43 teams a Heavy Unbalanced Set (Guard, Tackle, Tackle to UB side / Guard, TE to the NUB). They would need to make some type of adjustment with their 2 Techniques, 5 Techniques and OSLB's. Depending upon their adjustment, we like to run Belly X, Jet Sweep, and midline to the UB and ISV back to the NUB.
WE ARE ALSO A FLEX BONE TEAM AND SEE A LOT OF THE SAME FRONT. ALL WE HAVE DONE TO DICTATE THEIR FRONT IS TO BRING A SPLIT END DOWN INTO A TE POSITION. IF THEY KEEP THE DT'S IN 2'S THEIR DC IS GOING TO BE FIRED! THEY HAVE TO ADJUST TO THE TE SOME WAY. USUALLY THEY ARE TAUGHT TO SLIDE THE FRONT TO THE TE. NOW YOU CAN GO TO WORK. JUST A FEW THOUHTS!
