Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I am interested in understanding "Robber Coverage" in the secondary. I have heard this term used loosely for a couple of years, but I have yet to see a very good definition. We run a double-invert alignment (like a squat, 4-across) as our base alignment, and run disguised rotating coverages from there. We also run the standard 1 deep and 2 deep "shell" looks.
I'd be interested in what the definition of this scheme is and learning how exactly it works (alignments, reads, etc).
I got this explaination from a coach from Virginia. He explained it to me in this way:
He ran a over shifted 4-4 defense with a three deep secondary. The 4 lber's had the underneath ( OLBER's had flats, and ILBER's had middle curl). The corners would drop to deep halfs: the corners would work to the hashes/halves after the snap (before snap corners were 7 yards off los and 1 yard outside wide receiver). The free safety played 10 yards off los, in the middle of the field. He would squat there at the snap of the ball (no back peddle). The free safety would look for a specific receiver/pattern to rob ( on run he filled the alley). The safety was given specific keys for each down (offense tendencies, favorite receiver, or favorite pattern). The free safety is suppose to make a downhill run at the pattern and either make the interception or the big hit.
There are a number of different ways to play robber. To some, robber is simply man-free with the FS as a deep hole player and a LB as a short hole player.
Thanks for the input. It seems like the term "Robber" is general to defensive coverages much in the same way "Power" is to offensive run schemes! The general idea I get is that the FS keys either an uncovered OL or the #2 receiver, and based on those keys is either
1. very active in run support
or
2. Jumping a route or route combination downhill
I'll have to investigate this more. I'll see if I can get ahold of VTech or Temple's information!
Just call the football office at either university and you can talk live with the staff. If they are all out the day you call, just have them send you their defensive robber scheme and they will! Most Div.1-A schools have no problem with that sort of thing and will send you their best stuff.
