Coaches,
I know there are several of you out here who have the experience in coaching this type of a system. We are traditionally a 2RB / 1TE / 2WR offense. We have a system and terminology that provides us with nearly unlimited flexibility in our fomationing and playcalling, so we are fortunate. The last two seasons we have been experimenting with some 1-back stuff (1RB / 1TE / 3WR or 1RB / 2TE / 2WR looks) and we always have our 2RB / 2 or 3TE packages for short yardage.
Anyway, my question concerns shifting and motion and utilizing an H-Back type player. Right now we have a few kids coming back next season who are big enough and good enough athletes mentally and physically where we I think we can do it. Two are FB's, one is a TE, and one is a WB-type.
My first question is what kinds of simple systems are there out there to shift your H-back into various positions (like from FB to WB or vice-versa) in the formation? We'd love to be able to shift our FB into a TE or WB position in the formation, or shift a TE or WB back into an offset-I look. I think at the high school level, we'd be able to do some nice things to the defenses we face with this kind of action. We experimented with simple TE trades this season, and that in itself was good.
My second question revolves around installation and proper teaching. We are not a 2-platoon system. Most of these FB / TE type guys are LB's on defense, and a coupe are starters. We only have 1-2 offensive practice sessions during the regular week to perfect our trade. We are still primarily a 2 RB based team, and I don't want to have to take too much away from that. I know that for this system to be successful, the H-back players must be able to play FB, WB, WR, and TE all in one. So, they must know all the runing plays, all the pass routes, protections, assignments, etc. for those different positions.
I'm very serious about not "biting off more than we can chew", and I believe very strongly in perfecting your base offense...but I think we'd be negligant to not use our over-abundance of FB / TE type people we will have next year.
Are there any suggestons from anyone on this topic that might shed some light???
