Coaches,
As I begin to prepare for next season I find myself wanting to become more organized in my practice preparation. We are a 4A school with about 1350 students and have around 40 on the JV and 45 on the varsity. We have tried to two-platoon in the past but lack the lineman to do so. Anyone have any sample practice schedules they use that they would be willing to email me so that I can compare them with what we do? Always looking for a better way.
Hey coach just wanted to let you know what we do in our program. I dont have the #'s to platoon, because my phylosophy is to have the BEST players on the field. I try dont get me wrong but there are a few that NEVER come off the field. One thing I wanted to mention was that everyone on my staff has only one position reponsibility, meaning for us, on tuesday offensive day my RB coach has the Varsity RB's, and on wednesday defensive day he has the JV and Freshman RB's. This could be boring for some but it makes our coaches specialize and become very good at the position they coach.
We do this as well. We don't have the numbers to two platoon either. What I like about it is , is that if your staff has some form of continuity, the players will have the same position coach throughtout their high school career so by their junior and senior years they know exactly what this coach expects and more time can be spent refining as opposed to re-teaching. I also like the fact of watching the players mature during their careers as well, seeing it first hand. Also. Our coordinators plan both practices (var, JV) which allows the coordinators to make sure that the things they want implemented are definately being implemented. We do though have other staff members take over the play calling on game nights for the J.Vs , Usually younger coaches that we are grooming who need the experience. It still gives them the chance to have their hands in calling plays but within the realm of our offense/defense.

What do some of you guys do who don't have enough to split into 2 full squads(varsity off vs scout def and jv def vs scout off) we put our freshman through individual with our varsity and then they split off and go with our offensive or defensive coaches depending on if its an offensive day or defensive day. I don't like this and my hc is thinking about changing it next year. we don't have very strong coaches in some areas and i think it would be best to coach both sides of the ball. we only have 8 coaches to do 9-12. anyway any input would be greatly appreciated and as always run the option!
I too am looking for a sample practice plan. I'm implementing a new defense this year and want to be as efficient with my time as possible. If any one has any material they could share regarding practice planning, I would appreciate. Please email to jnsmith@k12.carr.org. Thanks in advance
We break down our staff like griff and ebbster50, but we practice offense and defense each day. We don't have the numbers that some of you guys have mentioned. We break down our team by SR/JR on the varsity group, and SO/FR on the JV group. Our 10th grade team plays on mondays, so the varsity and 9th grade will have their own practices.
Tuesday the varsity will start on offense and the jv will start on defense. The varisty DC, JV DC and 9th Grade DC will coach the jv during this period. The head coach, varsity OC, jv OC, 9th grade OC will be working with the varsity offense. We have a 20 min. special teams practice then we rotate groups. The head coach will now go with the defensive coaches and work the varsity def. practice while the remaining 3 off. coaches work with the jv teams.
Repeat on Wednesday.
9th grade plays on Thursday and the 10 grade practices with the varsity.
If anyone has any ideas to improve what I have listed please feel free to post. Always looking for ways to improve our practices.

Freshman practice seperat. We platoon and the JV for the most part servise the Varsity (team , inside run, and blitz pick up), with varsity coaching along the way.
Coach note that we get 42 plays of "O" and "D" a day monday - Wend.
