Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
We have been very successful running our spread offense, but are faced with the realization that our returning QB will not be the athlete that last year's was. We are looking to place a more athletic player at the position and run much more option, including the mid-line. My problem is that we will have a returning H back who rushed for over 1300 yards, but does not seem to be the inside dive back for a mid-line. We do have a back that will fit the bill as an inside runner, but how do I not give away our hand by placing him as our 1-back only when running the option. I Like Paul Johnson's offense but I am not sure I want to give up our offense to focus on option only. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Coach change him up as a you would a H back in a one back set. Line him up as a slot back, WR, put him in motion, align him as a TE, etc. and then when you pop him back there at FB it shouldn't cause a big stir. Of course, if your going to run the option, make him the FB and the other guy the TB and run the option from the "I". Coach him up, toughen him up, and turn him loose! If he is physical, he will learn. If he is afraid to run inside, you'll have to come up with another viable solution such as reevaluate your personnel and find one who can get the job done! The other possibility is to run the option out of a run and shoot or spread double wing formation with the QB in shotgun. Keep your FB type-player back with the QB. Then, waggle motion your slot reciever (put your kid who rushed for 1300 yards at that position) and run triple option. You can also run a very effective lead or speed option out of this formation with the FB-type playing blocking the DE and the QB and the slot receiver running the ball.
By using the option out of the spread double wing, you will open up all sorts of nifty plays like reverses, counters, shovel passes, and play action.
Thanks Tiger and goVert. I like both of the suggestions and it sure would make the defense have to focus on where the H is lined up. Have either of you placed a man in motion and then used him as a dive back in a triple read?
