Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Looking at the various rules for IZ I was wondering how the covered and uncovered OL step vs the various tech. If the OG has a 3 tech and you are running the IZ to him how does he step and how will the center step who is going to combo with him. What if he gets a head up how will they step, and finally what happens when the guard has a 1 tech and you are running to his side how will the guard and center step. Im looking for foot placement etc...
Joe Bugel taught it this way (the Skins ran the Inside Zone and the old Counter yesterday vs a GOOD Vikings team for 130 yds - looked like the "Old Days"):
A) Covered man aim for outside # of DLM (no matter WHERE he is) B) Uncovered man steps for near hip of DLM (no matter WHERE he is).
THAT IS NOT ONLY SIMPLE - GIVES MAXIMUM VERTICAL DRIVE OFF THE BALL (none of this stuff where you "automatically step playside gap" which would allow - for example - a 4I great penetration).
Oneback, Do you always step with your playside foot first? For example if the PSG has a 3 tech and we are running the zone to the right where he is, would he step with his right first to the DL PS hip 1st or with his left foot to the crotch 1st. Would it be the same with the OZ as well.
Covered man steps to the playside number no matter WHERE he is. If he is in a "tuff" 4I - IF you step with playside foot (just to be consistent) it is just a QUICK up & down (in place) before foring into his outside # with inside foot.
I can explain this better via phone. Call me at 804-740-4479 before 10 PM (EDT)
Bill, I have talked to you recently and I will call again soon. I am just so concerned about foot placement with the IZ and OZ. I like the rule "NO MATTER WHERE HE IS" it is consistent and easy to remember, the TUFF call is just something you have to use with true gap pluggers. I do not consider a 3 or 5 or even a 1 a "GAP" tech, am I right in saying the only time you will use a TUFF is when you have a true gap defender. Is the 2nd step going to the crotch of the DL when you are covered. How about the second step of the uncovered man where will that end up? Below you said that , THAT IS NOT ONLY SIMPLE - GIVES MAXIMUM VERTICAL DRIVE OFF THE BALL (none of this stuff where you "automatically step playside gap" which would allow - for example - a 4I great penetration). Is this the chance to use the TUFF vs. the 4i or not?
What are you referring to as "GUT" - a fold between ON G & ON T? If so, that woiuld be fine, but I had MUCH RATHER run to the side where the B gap is defended by a DLM!!!!!
What are you referring to as "GUT" - a fold between ON G & ON T? If so, that woiuld be fine, but I had MUCH RATHER run to the side where the B gap is defended by a LBer!!!!!
NOTE - FIRST OF TWO POSTS IMMEDIATELY ABOVE THIS IS INCORRECT - LAST WORD SHOULD BE LB - NOT DLM (RUN INSIDE ZONE AT THE BUBBLE WHERE B GAP DEFENDED BY A LBER!!!!!)
for inside zone if there is a 4i I would stay with zone blocking the tackle doesn't have as good of an angle to down block. It it is a 3 tech then yeah you could probably fold it.
Coach Joe, Do most teams zone the 4i with the On G and On T (Tuff), or would the On G go with Solo and the On T do his normal zone steps? If the tackle has a DL in the c gap the guard and tackle have to go alone, however could the TE help the tackle with the 7 tech---out to force?
You have to follow the TOTAL rules for the play as to how it will be blocked. These are VERY SIMPLE - just follow them. IF you don't double a 4I on the INSIDE ZONE - there will be NO vertical push off the LOS which is ESSENTIAL on the play:
ZONE BLOCKING RULES:
A) (EVERYONE) IF YOU ARE UNCOVERED BY A DLM — ZONE WITH YOUR TEAMMATE TO PLAYSIDE. B) (EVERYONE) IF YOU ARE COVERED BY A DLM - LOOK BACKSIDE - #1 IF YOUR TEAMATE BACKSIDE IS UNCOVERED - ZONE WITH HIM. #2 IF YOUR TEAMATE BACKSIDE IS COVERED — MAN BLOCK
"HOs-Hos" - JC (Tiger 1), Jerry Campbell, myself & others have written volumns on the Inside Zone under "INSTALLING THE RUNNING GAME", and "OFFENSIVE LINE PLAY". Check these out thoroughly because all of these questions have been covered in DETAIL!!!!!
