2 back/3 wide vs. 1 back/TE/3 wide

I am usually a spread coach (2x2 or 3x1 or 3x2) but hae been reintroduced to having a TE, or altleast a WR on the LOS within a few yds of the OT, after this year and seeing how many youth teams forget to put coverage on a TE. Coach Tedford, when he was here at Oregon, used to do a lot of 3x1 with the TE flexed to create what he called a boomer formation.

He would start the backsin the I form and motion, or shift , the HB to a position 3yds outside of the flexed TE. Depending on what the defense showed, the QB could check to a speed option to either side or audibel a quick slant to the H coming under a skinny post by the TE. Having attended 4 yrs of coaches clinncs and football camps as an istructor, I was privy to many checkerboard training sessions with coach Tedford. Talk about learning a lot.
