Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
what do you triple option coaches like to do when you're faced with a 4i technique to your OPTION ON ME set with open side option? Do you block the read and make it an automatic keep/pitch, or do you read the 4i, interested in what you do here.....
IT IS NO LONGER AN OPTION IF YOU DON'T READ IT, IT THEN BECOMES A PREDETERMINED PITCH OR KEEP BY THE QB. THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT MAKES IT AN OPTION, READ YOUR KEY AND REACT TO HIS ACTION. BUT, IF HE IS IN A 4I, IT WOULD BECOME AN AUTOMATIC PULL IF YOUR RUNNING THE ISV JUST AS ON THE STRONG SIDE, AND THIS IS DETERMINED IN THE PSL SO IN THAT SENSE IT NOW BECOMES A PREDERTERMINED PLAY NOT TO GIVE.

With option on me and a defense gives you a 4i technique to the openside run the openside load because of the duece block by the guard and tackle makes it easy to come around on the combo. Coach Campbell
I know for the most part the 4i is B gap responsible, so there wouldn't be a FB give, but if the 4i stands his ground or goes up field or back pedals(never happens?)wouldn't it be a give to the FB?
We would loop that tech. with our tackle and still have the QB read it. I do go over that alignment with our QB's and tell them it will most likely be a fake to the FB and look to keep or pitch off next defender. Like I said, I know he is right there on pre-snap alignment(4i), just wondering if I should be doing or telling our kids different?
In my experience, if he is in a 4i he wont do any of the things you mention in your post. He will come hard in the B gap! That is why we teach the QB's to think ' quick pitch' when he is going to the open side. But, Coach Campbell is right, run the load because of the deuce and it is a better play in the first place!

Thanks Coach E, I appreciate your quick response. I have thought about the load. We have never fully run it though?
Our offense is wing-t. We have really concentrated alot on triple and midline in the last few seasons. In our option series we run triple option and midline option. In our other series we have FB Down option(TE side) and Belly option(open side), both are double options with no FB read. Do you suggest running one of those vs. a 4i?
The belly option in our wing-t system is to the open/weakside and has the FB take a short lateral step, plant deep in the backfield and fake to the B gap- the QB reverses out fakes to FB and runs a double option with the backside slot/wingback in motion. The line to the playside has the option to reach block or PSTackle block down on the DT and the guard logs the DE.
The down option for us is to the TE/wingback strongside. The FB dives for the outside hip of the PST and fakes- QB reverses and fakes to FB, double option with the halfback/slotback running as pitch man. PSG pulls and logs the 1 st outside the TE's block. PST and TE block down.
Brief description, but these are the two double options we run. Belly and Down option.
As I read more and more post and saw more plays on the OSV as I started coaching in the wing-t, I noticed that it was very similar also. I ran just traditional wing-t to start and have added the isv and midline in the last few seasons and learning more about different options and I do find the Down option to be similar to the OSV. I coached in the "I" offense before changing to wing-t and we only ran isv triple option and load option with the Fb leading.
This site has definitely peeked my interest in more option added to my wing-t scheme.
Coach Tinglof - I have seen some wing - t schemes that left the DE unblocked and pitched off of him on the Belly option, I think they had the tackle down on the 4i, guard around for the alley player, TB(psHB) on the PSLB and the FB faking to the FS level. We are looking at a way to attack the open side when we get reduction - we would run inside veer if we saw a 3 technique but a 4i would be automatic pull. Our problem is 50 fronts that don't reduce on the open side. They make the inside veer weak always be a pitch. DE has QB and DT has FB, Secondary rolls to pitch along with LB flow. We are looking at more midline and Belly(down).

Coach Varley,
There are some good suggestion from other coaches on running load vs. the 4i, we just never have put it in. I would definitely look into midline if you want to attack a 3 tech. We prefer to run midline at a 3 tech. or 2 tech. and run isv triple on a 1 tech. or 2i tech. We do run triple vs. a 3 tech.(double team, chip to LB), but I think vs. the 50 front with the 3 tech. knocked down becomes a real fast read from FB to pitch on the reduced side. We try not to run midline vs. a 0 tech. NG, it can be done and some people run it and have the FB read the Centers block, etc. we just prefer not to. We can attack that defense with our trap game and sweep. Good luck.
What about changing play to outside veer? That's what we do.Guard and tackle get push on 4i to LB.Read next defender for dive .It was our best play this year. Also, step Offensive tackle around 4i for scraping LB,and read 4i.
We prefer the OSV against a 4i, too. But, you and I are both flexbone guys...I'm not sure what formation Coach E is running it from.
Against a 50 (5-2) or 30 (3-3), we'll use the G and T in combination with the 4i and the LB. However, against an even front, the T has the 4i and the C and G combo on the A-gap DT to the BSLB. When you run OSV against an even, do you still combo with the G and T? We will also loop the T around the 4i, just like you do, against a 30 or 50. On this play, the QB knows it will be a pull. Do you loop an even front?
1 and 2 depend what triple scheme we're in. although i like to start off reading it. you must have a) a way to help your qb out if he has a problem and b) if your fb is your best runner - keep him in the game.
VERY INTELLIGENT PACKAGE! IF THINGS GO AWRY AS THEY DO, YOU HAD BETER HAVE A CONTINGENCY PLAN TO STOP THE BLEEDING! YOU'VE GOT ALL 3 AVENUES COVERED. I DON'T THINK YOUR SYSTEM INCORPORATES TOO MUCH AT ALL, I, LIKE YOU, THINK THAT IF YOU HAVE THE TIME AND KNOW HOW TO TEACH WHAT YOUR DOING GO FOR IT! WE RUN AND THROW OUT OF 21 DIFFERENT FORMATIONS, WE HAVE 19 DIFFERENT DEFENSIVE FRONTS TO FIGHT WITH, WE HAVE 9 SECONDARY COVERAGES. ON THE HS LEVEL WHERE YOU ARE TIME RESTRICTED, I KNOW THAT IS NOT PRACTICAL, BUT THE CONCEPT THAT YOU SEEM TO EMPLOY ALONG THE SAME LINE, IS VERY FEASABLE.

kc361- IF we get a 4i,we want to run outside veer or lead option right at him.We try to get a push wit the Guard and Tackle on the 4i to LB/backside LB.Our slotback then releases straight to LB.We will read the next man on or off L.O.S.As far as doubling the DT on an even front,we are always trying to combo to LB.We try to move the DT straight back into LB.E-mail me if interested in swapping film ,blocking schemes, etc. lotiefs@bellsouth.net I coach in LOUISIANA.Where are you?---Got some great cut ups of NICHOLLS STATE running the flexbone.I love it
