Coach the Tailback ISO like all the ISO I teadh are built around the near ear and a phrase that I use "Part The Sea" at the point of attack. By pushing the near ear and slowly rotating the combo the ISO parts and the hole widens and becomes walled by the combos that are generated by the down linemen. Example ISO Tightside = 7 tech, 3 tech and a backside 1 tech. to the 7 tech you would get a trey out by the tight end and tackle on the 7 tech to outside invert., the guard would have the 3 tech by himself turning him out using his near ear rule, the center and backside guard would combo the 1 tech ( ace ) to the backside backer slowly rotating their butts while tracking the backside backer. if backer flows over the top the center would pick him up, if backer triggered underneath the combo then the guard would have him. The fullback would have playside LBer. This is a place we can start on the ISO remember: " Part The Seas At The Point Of Attack" Coach Campbell
Coach sometimes our guys have a little trouble understanding which LB it is that we are ISOlating. I tell them it is going to be the first LB past the center to the play side. Is their a better way to determine who the ISO LB is going to be? Is there one rule or phrase that stays consistent?

Coach you are on the right track, the explanation that you use is the same as I use. Indeed its the playside lber not necessarily the first backer past the center this example would take into consideration a 4-3 scheme. Thus, its the first LBer playside not the first backer past the center. A running back must understand the the oline will push the near ear of the down defender so he must know where the sea will part. Example would be the turn out of a 3 tech by the guard thus the ISO is running into "A" gap. We can go further with this. Coach CAmpbell
Coach versus a 4-3 do you want to ISO Mike with PT and PTE Trey base on DE and SAM, or would you have PT deuce on 3 tech to mike, with the ISO on Sam with an ace lion to will?

The rule is playside Lber So the ISO goes to the same with a base by the TE turning the 9 tech out and the guard and tackle duece blocking the 3 tech to the mike. This is done by using the near ear rule, thus the sea parts in "C" gap. Coach CAmpbell
But how would you run the tailback iso against a 50 front where the End is head on the TE, Tackle is head on the OT, Nose is head on Center, Tackle is head on the weak OT and DE is outside of weak OT. ILB's are head on OG's at 4 yards. How would your near ear rules work to run the iso in that situation?

Remember use near ear towards the play. vs head up 50 - The Tight end would position his head on the inside ear of 6 tech. the tackle would position his helmet on the iside ear of the 4 tech and the guard would position his helmet on the near ear of the nose and the center since he is working a combo with the playside guard would have his helmet backside of the nose comboing to backside LBer. The guard would have the inside ear of the 4 tech and the backside tackle the inside ear of the def. end. he and the backside guard fan backside. Coach CAmpbell
Coach C and others, Is the following another viable option when blocking the ISO. We followed the "near ear" rule except for the blocker who, in total man blocking, was responsible for the playside LB. We had him doulble team using the near ear principle without worrying about the LB. The LB was assigned to the FB. The result was a pretty good "parting of the sea". The other combos were blocked exactly as you described. We had a very good blocking FB and this play was extremely successful for us.

Coach on the ISO is a designed play for the fullback to ISO on the playside backer, any combo should be looking for backside linebacker away from the one being isolated on by the fullback. Coach Campbell

Coach because the ISO is built around the near ear rule for setting the blocking schemes the tackle and tight end would trey out to the sam linebacker with the guard bace on the 3 tech. The ISO would set intself in "A" gap with the center and guard pushing their combo to the backside LBer. The fullback would ISO the Mike Backer. Coach CAmpbell
