Coach: I am almost embarrased to say that I am an assistant at a local high school here and have understood offensive formations for years, but honestly last night in talking with one of our defensive coaches, I was stumped on a philosophical question that he had. I will elaborate. In a typical pro right formation where the X is aligned on the LOS on the left, the Y = tight end on the right and the Z off the LOS scrimmage to the right. What is the evolution of that formation, slot right and left formations and why do the receivers move around so much to create these formations? ( i.e pro left, right, slot left, right) Why doesn't the WR just stay in their same positions like lineman? I guess one could create an offensive philosophy to do that, but what are the advantages? disadvantages? For example; if I have a right offesive tackle, I am not going to move him to left tackle-generally,unless you want to isolate him, his designated position is right tackle so a right tackle will stay at right tackle, right guard at right guard, center at center. With the receivers in a pro right formation the Z moves to the left to make a slot left position and X moves to the right to make a slot right position on the outside of the Z genrally. The Z is generally considered the inside receiver but in the pro right formation he is an outside receiver. Am I just confusing myself? Is the evolution that a Z receiver is more of a running back/ WR and the X receiver is typically a speed guy where the Y is a big blocker who can catch the ball on occasion. I guess what I am trying to do is answer his question. He is an defenseive line /o-line coach but he makes some great points that I can't answer and honestly is making me think as well. Are we questioning things that we shouldn't or is it like "faith"and you just know that what is being said is the truth? I guess I can't get past the whys? I hope this makes sense. If not, just respond by posting. THIS DOES NOT MAKE ANY SENSE? The many wonders of the world.

One of the reasons folks identify and tag a player as "Z" is so they have control on where to align him. By calling slot, twins etc. they can move him around as needed to create a numbers advantage. Also, by designating him, you simplify teaching. You only have to teach him routes or blocking schemes that are specific to the offense he is in. It simplifies teaching and the amount of material he has to learn.
You might explain it to your defensive coach in terms he probably understands. Many defenses flop defensive personnell so they can simplify teaching. A strongside defender only has to learn to recognize strongside blocking schemes and vice versa.
Good Luck!
