I have just learned that I will only have one assitant and he has very little football knowledge. I have a very "special" group of kids coming in this year that I fear I will not be able to allocate proper time to during practice for fear of always feeling behind. Does any one have any suggestions on how to handle this? And how should I allocate responsibilities and time to the O, D, Special Teams etc....
I know that feeling because I have been there. Here's my advice:
First, keep everything simple. Especially if you have big numbers out. The more complicated you make it, the harder it will become to manage it.
Second, sit down with your newbie coach and teach him what you want him to know. Get tape cut ups together of the skills you are going teach and have your coach watch it. This will give him a better understanding of what your going to teach. Also use some or all of those teaching tapes out there. But only those that have the skills you are going to teach. You can also use these to teach the kids.
Third, you and your new coach need to get to coaching clinics. The more you both learn, the better off you will be.
Fourth, when running your practices, when you break down into groups for drills, break down into stations that form a circle, with the stations with in 10-20 yards of each other. This way you can be in the middle directing/watching/rotating to help out.
Fifth, have your upper classmen take responsibility by running the drills and help teach the lower classmen the skills during drills. This will take some of the stress off. It will also allow the kids to take ownership of the program. This will reinforce pride, enthusiasm, the idea that things need to be done right, and the sense that they need to leaders.
Sixfth, when you break down into O,D,special teams, only practice one of these at a time. This way you can focus all of your attention/energy.
Make it your off season goal to search the community looking for volunteer help. There must be alumni, old coaches, student teachers, etc. who are interested in helping out. Even if they can only be there 3 days a week, it's better than nothing.
