Coaches looking at a new program.

I just lost my most recent coaching position when the school fired our head coach and is releasing the entire staff so whomever is the new coach can bring in his own staff.
One of the coaches that I have coached with has been approached to take the head coaching position at a smaller school nearby. This school has had 3 winning seasons in 20+ years. He has told me that if he takes it, he will offer me his #2 position.


We have coached together in the past, but neither of us has been a head coach.

What advice, rules, suggestions would anyone give for coaches taking over an unsuccessful program.
