This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I am currently a high school assistiant coach and an assistaint for a Minor League Football team. I would love to GA in college but I am not sure how to go about doing that. Do I need to just send letters to coaches and see about availiblity? I will have me degree in history soon and want to get into the college coaching ranks, is GA the best way to do this or are there other ways to break in? Thank you very much for your time.
Not to discourage anyone, but most GA jobs are volunteer situations, although now the NCAA has loosened up to where as as many as two GA's can get paid. At any rate, most of these positions are filled by ex-players from that college (who have played recently for them) and know their system. It is cheap labor for the HC and his budget concerns, but it is very useful for the GA in that he is able to make the transition from player to coach quite easily in friendly environs.

At one time in my life, I tried to do what you are doing. Not to discourage you, but most colleges save those GA's for kids who played in their programs or for a realitive of one of the assistant coaches/friends. ( I know: I lost Ga positions to these circumstances).
The best places to check for GA positions are on the web sites for the NCAA and NAIA. If you are a member of AFCA, you can check their job board. Sometime GA jobs are on there.
What the others are saying is the truth, however on a brighter note, I know an individual who was looking for the same opportunity as yourself. At the time he was a high school coach and was wanting to GA for a nearby major university. After applying for a GA position and getting passed over, he simply went and hung out around the coaching staff, around the practices, etc. and before long an opportunity came open. The Head Coach decided that since this guy constantly hung around, he might as well be working. So basically, his persistance paid off. Now this was, and still is, a BIG TIME program and this, I'm sure, is a rare situation. But, who knows???
Also, depending on who's in your area, you could also GA at a smaller school, such as a DII, DIII or NAIA. But don't expect to make a decent living off the stipend, if you get one at all.
On the other hand, it's a way to get a free Master's degree and get some experience. If you don't have a family to support, it may not be so bad.
You know, things like this make me wonder how did Weis, Mangino and Fran ever get to be D-1 and pro coaches. I mean if it is so tough to get your foot in the door if you weren't a player, how did these guys get in?

VERY ADMIRABLE ATTITUDE COACH. GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO WAIT ( AND WORK AND WORK AND WORK!) IT HAS ALWAYS SEEMED TO ME THAT THE COACHES CALLED "LUCKY" BY THEIR PEERS, ALWAYS SEEM TO BE THE ONES WHO WORK THE HARDEST, ARE THE BEST PREPARED, AND EARN A EXCELLENT LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION FROM THEIR FORMER HEAD COACHES. JUST A THOUGHT.

You have some really good advice and insights here. My suggestion is to pick a school and a coach at that school whose style of play you admire. Learn everything you can from his articles, clinics, tapes, interviews, etc. Dissect everything he does, how it's done and why he does it. You are trying to learn is his philosophy and its application from A-Z. Then, add to that knowledge by further study and application. When you feel you can really talk the talk and walk the walk, contact him. Your knowledge and experience will show and you just may get the shot you want. Coaching good football is incredibly more complex than most realize. Just look at the quality of knowledge on this site and you will see a part of what I mean. Best wishes for a great future! You can do it.
