Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Been breaking down the Fiesta Bowl tape (this stuff is new to me). It looks like there are two different sets of steps for the backfield. I'm thinking one is zone and one is veer. Can someone verify or correct me? Also, I'm wondering what the aiming points are for the back and his read if it is a zone?
zone? Let's say the back is on the QB's left side. The back steps flat or maybe 45 degress with his right foot, gathers with the left foot and pushes off - it's almost like a skip or hitch. The steps seem similiar to what you would want out of the back in the zone play in an I formation - drop, cross, push. The QB steps up with his right foot for the mesh point.
veer? Again let's say the back is on the QB's left side. The back drop steps with his right foot, kinda like a split jump, and heads straight upfield I believe. The QB steps up with his left foot first then his right to form the mesh point. He rides the back downhill more than with the other backfield steps.
We've been running the zone play much like WVU. The back's alignment is not as deep as Utah's and the back crosses the QB, continues for two steps then "bang it or bend it". Basically I'm guessing Utah is running more of an inside zone play, and WVU is more of an outside zone play.
Also noticed that when they motion for the zone? backfield action, they did that sliding motion; and when they did the veer? backfield action, the motion went fast over the top.
You are correct about the steps in the backfield. The basic steps for either the veer ( same side as back) or zone (crossing the qb's face). Obviously there are the other things that they do off of this but this is part of their bread and butter. I know that BGSU has the back read the inside hip of the Playside Tackle for their cut, and this is also more of an inside zone. Also the back is farther back in order to keep his shoulders squarer to the LOS.
Thanks again. I guess Bowling Green runs just about everything that Utah does. Do you have any information on when their clinic is, and how are they with high school coaches setting up some individual time? I'm in Maryland so that would work out better than Utah or Florida. Coach you've been very helpful.
Not a problem coach. Bowling green is where Meyer came from before Utah. Their HC was the OC when Meyer was there and their OC now was the OL coach so they are very similar. I don't know as of yet when the clinic is but I do know that they are very accomodating to visiting coaches, as a matter of fact some of the coaches on the current staff recommend that it is better to come and spend time other than the clinic that way the trip would be worth it . Excellent staff and very hospitable.
Also coach, if you make the trip to BG ask coach "Stud" their line coach about the Skip pull that you mentioned in the other thread, they run that as well. You will like their QB as well, very gifted athlete, I think he was MAC player of the year and he was only a sophomore!
