Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
This is for all you guys who play man every year no matter what. What would you do if you didn't have better athletes, or even equal athletes? Do you switch to zone, or stay with what you/they know?
I'm a died in the wool cover 0 or 1 devotee! But, lets be reasonable, there are the nights you just can't run with them! So, you had better have a solid zone cover package to implement immediately if your getting toasted! Respect your opponent, give him his due! No matter how good your guys are, there is always someone out there that will put it to you every now and then and you had better have a good contingency plan to get him off your back. With HS level sports running a cycle, every so often you are going to get a bunch who are just not up to your usual standards and you still have to play that season! IMO, anyone who teaches only one or the other (man or zone) would be a little less than sharp in my book. But, you know I can't ever recall ever playing anyone who wouldn't change up if need be. Once played a real powerhouse Wing-T team who simply would not reduce, no matter what they saw. We creamed them!!!

Tiger One - I agree with you, you have to have a plan for everything that might happen. That's why we have a Cover 2 and 3 as well. I especially like to have a C2 vs the option. I just HATE the idea of playing zone all night. Sometimes I think I'd rather take my chances coaching up my guys to be in the right place and take my chances - even when we are out manned. Right now I've got some pretty good DBs so I guess I better enjoy it while it lasts.
In my neck of the woods, pass defense is really an afterthought. The reason is that probably 90% of the teams we play run some version of the Wing T or Wishbone.
I wish we played more passing teams because our defensive players get to practice against it every day. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Smashmouth and Wing-T football is King in Northwestern Illinois!
Our base defense on the Frosh-Soph is Cover II, mainly because my philosophy is "why stop 'em with 8 in the box when you can stop 'em with 7 in the box?".
The varsity started the season running a pro-style 3-4. The 3-4 is a great defense when you play against passing teams. However, it does not work very well against double tight, full Bone teams. We junked the 3-4 by the 4th week of the season and basically sat in a 50 Cover II/Cover III the rest of the year.
Next season, we are going to play a 5-4 as our base defense.
Stopping the run is our primary concern. We have never really worried about getting beat by the pass.
